Well perhaps me - I lucked out.
    AutomaticCostly-VM 1 core, 384 MB RAM, 10 GB NVMe, 1 IPv4, 128 GB Transfer
Live in the UK and server is Phoenix, which is totally useless for me.

    But once bitten....

I got this one last year as well. :+1:

Last year was totally my fault. I wrote the Mystery Box listing due to VirMach time constraints so it would be ready in time. VirMach gave me the details, but I worded the thread to be too much of a mystery and caused all the issues. Since it has become obvious to me over time that the written word is not one of my talents. I've stayed away from content writing in general, except for my own comments.

tldr: Rocks should be thrown at FrankZ instead of VirMach for last years Mystery Box issues.

Honestly my memory on it is so bad I don't even remember the year, but since you're taking the blame, then I feel okay defending you. In hindsight, I don't think much could have been done to avoid upsetting the people that got upset and there's no way wording it differently would have helped, and there's a good chance the way I would have ended up wording it would have been worse. If someone received one of the unlucky deals & were mad about it, then it wouldn't have mattered what was written.

I feel like everyone's focusing on those very specific negative emotions. If we did that then the old VirMach black friday flash deals were a disaster and hated by all, since all I could recall would be Cloudflare errors, dozens of people clicking on deals 10 milliseconds too late and being upset.

Actually I've found it, I'm going to read over it again now.

    • You said it's different than anything that has been done and to read carefully.
    • Random location was specifically mentioned.
    • Random specification was also mentioned.

This is just from the first couple sentences. Reading the rest, it's actually less of a mystery than how I remembered it being posted. The number of different variations are mentioned (25.) The exact range of specifications is mentioned. You provided the worst and best plans, quite literally showing that it could be a 128MB plan (in a random location.)

So yeah, my determination is that you were most definitely not at fault in any way, and that was a non-issue. If you were any more clear and made it any less of a mystery, it would have been listing every single plan, and people would have still ordered it, and still got upset if they got a 128MB in a location they didn't want. Even for the location it was written that the default location box is one of our primary locations that has the highest availability.

Alright anyway let's do it again. I'm expiring Christmas deals now. Last call!

  • Poll results are going to be used as of right now. I see "1" has the highest number of votes, so we're going with that. If we make it past day one, I'll just continue the same pattern (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8) to keep it simple.

Also I would like to make it clear I bear no malice to @VirMach or @FrankZ for the crap mystery box.
I knew it was a mystery and could be good / bad. It cost $20 and I even gave it back to 'save' Virmach the IP and resell etc. From my recollection there were more bad than good boxes (which caused the complaints).
So when this 'special' came back, there is no way I would advise anyone to take it unless they are happy to gamble (which I was). However once bitten twice shy......
I would rather stick with Virtbot and have 9 good value vms which I have been able to choose.
Virmach does this for some fun but it is also a business which somehow needs to make money. The fun can be on either side but unlikely to be on both at the same time..... <3

    Random specification was also mentioned.

As I recall the order link of last year's mystery box was initially leaked on other fourms and telegram channels so literary many people who made the purchase before the rules post here. Coincidentally that the very first batch of people rushing to order mystery box without knowing the details were all got the 128MB plan. (because you decided to deploy in batches and the first batch was just 128MB plan) That it is why so many people upset at it because all of them didn't know that before.

  • I’ll fix the 1GB bandwidth bug for those who ordered right now. That happens when a new product is created if it’s not specifically zeroed out (and I forgot about it.)

They averaged out to a really good deal. We gave out a high amount of resources per dollar, higher than if it wasn't a mystery. If someone bought like 10 plans spread out, they'd come out ahead.

We're being even more generous with the resources given out on this one. Worst case scenario you're getting a 768MB service in a location you pick, at a lower price than our Black Friday price match deals and depending on what mystery day it is, you can also exceed what you would be getting as a flash deal.

Speaking of which... Message to people who ordered: I don't think we're going to make it past the first day but I want to emulate all the fun we were going to have, so if we end up below the quantity limit, I'll let you guys post your order ID here and pick a number between 1 and 8. If you really want 1, then confirm it (or just don't post) otherwise you can pick to have the day 2 to 8 mystery instead. I'll confirm this when the sale ends but you guys can post your choices now if desired so we'll have it ready once sale ends.

They were originally supposed to be 1GB crappy boxes but I lowered it to make it slightly more expensive than the Christmas sale, since the Christmas sale didn't have a mystery.

I'm changing the them to 1GB now (retroactively.) Note, this doesn't count as your mystery.

    @JoeMerit said:

Okay I've made up my mind, unless anyone opposes.

We'll keep the sale going regardless of quantities sold. After the first candle is over, we'll put it out of stock, give everyone their mystery, then put it back in stock as the second one, and repeat. This lets people who wanted to collect more than one mystery to do that and keeps it closer to the original plans. It'll probably get messier if we try to get people to choose a mystery after they thought they were just getting the first mystery.

So an update just so it's all in one place

    • Quantity limits are no longer important.
    • Plans are 1GB now instead of 768MB
  • @Virmach so the mystery hasn't been delivered yet? I just assumed Candle #1 was the minimum specs and I didn't 'win' anything? (thanks for making it better though!)

Mystery revealed and processed at around 4-5PM PST daily.

Nothing “won” yet, the bandwidth fix was a bug and 1GB upgrade was an overall change.

(edit) But again please for anyone reading this, don't expect anything more than a 1GB VPS for $18.88/2YR.

I think you may be putting a bit of 'spin' on what I remember although we are talking a year ago so I could well be mistaken.
I totally beleive what you just said i.e. you DID give out a high amount of resources..... but this was to a smaller number of purchasers. The majority did get more crap, but when averaged out, as you say, the amount of resources per dollar was higher.
Please don't misundestand - I and most of the others fullly appreciated what we were purchasing and in no way want to suggest you were doing anything wrong. You wanted to create a bit of fun (which you did) and some people really did benefit.

We're definitely not disagreeing, I was just adding some context. If they averages to 2-3GB memory then that would mean more lower ones than higher ones, although it was balanced relatively well.

This year we're just adding a minimum that's 1GB (now) instead of 128MB so that also means the higher end could be lower. To be clear I have no idea what it averages out to this time, and the mysteries aren't just a spreadsheet of random specifications. I just very much started typing out stuff into a notepad file for the mysteries as I went. Think of them as nothing but potential bonus gifts. At the price we're giving the 1GB service, it's already competitive so I don't think anyone should be upset if that's all it is, to be honest. I think about 30 minutes of thought went into this sale.

As far as this years 'mystery box' I must be stupid, if I use the link on the first page I see the Cristmas list which does not look like any mystery to me and prices don't match the Candle prices? i know all about security by obscurity but applying this to buying???? <3

The first page is just confusing at this point. Christmas sale is over and Hannukah sale is 1GB now. If @FrankZ has the time and desires, Christmas portion should be moved down and Hannukah portion changed from having eight copy pastes of candles to just one and it says 1GB, 1 Core, 25GB SSD, 2TB BW.
