I have a suggestion on whether lucky draw should include the users joined earlier to increase their chance.

For example, when reaching 300 users, draw from 1-300 instead of 201-300. That means the earlier you join, the higher the chance of winning. Need approval from @cociu and @AnthonySmith

Round 1: Draw from 1-300
Round 2: Draw from 1-400

@FAT32 - this looks good - I'd like to bolster the trust factor (mostly as a psychological exercise) by inviting people to post their favorite "random" numbers here. We can then take some arbitrary number (lets say 7? or whatever) of those posted numbers and concatenate those with the seeds you have already given hashes of - if you don't mind doing a little extra work to run your code again?

Does this seem like perhaps a reasonable way to further obfuscate our elaborate scheme?

Okay so ... since the purpose of this numerical stone soup is primarily to get "buy-in" from potentially otherwise skeptical participants, let's keep the opportunity to for more people to add their magic numbers open for the duration

when we get to member 600 signed up, I'll take all the numbers suggested prior to that point (starting with @notty's "4") - concatenate the digits into an ascii string - and compute the sha256sum of that string. Then @FAT32 can prepend that hash to his original (unhashed, secret) string for the 600 drawing and use that as a seed for the random number generator as per the code he posted earlier. My expectation is that this methodology shouldl be easily recognized as a way to add a relatively unpredictable salt to the secret string.

And so on once we've reached 700, 800, 900, and 999 signups - with the grand concatenation always starting from @notty's "4"

If anyone wants to add more than one number, I'll allow it. (For example, so far we've got two numbers from @dahartigan, very prem!) ... keep 'em coming folks, in plaintext ascii form por favor!

@BlaZe - the prize for "real signup" number 200 was none other than the perfectly timed and also very lucky @FAT32 - and you may wonder why the prize was won by profile number 221 rather than 200 - that was due to eliminating a number of test accounts created during early development phase of the forum.

After that there was some further discussion and some good suggestions, from which the concensus decision emerged to both simplify and complicate the selection process ....

The simplification was to just use the raw signup count as a trigger for selecting a new winner (at 300, 400, 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, and 999) - no longer bothering to account for any "testing" or otherwise bogus signups

The complication was that the winner would be randomly selected from the signups at that point. This was seen as a way to encourage people to sign up sooner rather than later - whereas before there might have been some attempt to finesse the timing when signing up, if one were waiting to snipe the exact slot already predetermined as the next winner.

Now here we are, enjoying yet another wrinkle in the process for random selection. This is both a response to and continuation of a bit of trolling about trust and transparency. I am obviously likely to be a bit biased now but I do think it's been working out just fine lately ... if I do say so myself. Bottom line is we're having some fun witn it again - but I think it actually may now be a decent attempt at a verifiably fair and trustworthy random selection method.
