EDU50 is for anyone who has an email address from an educational institution.
This includes:

• students
• educators / teachers
• school janitors
• alumni - I'm in this category
• anyone who bought an @caa.columbia.edu account for $76 from codydoby
• anyone who has a friend in the above category, and is willing to loan them an alias or create a mailing list in their department system

Clearly not sustainable.
