[FOSSVPS - Alexhost] Free Chisinau 2 x E5-2680 v2, 4 vCores, 4 GB DDR3 ECC RAM, 100 GB RAID 10 Disk!
Happy Sunday!
With thanks
to AlexHost, also here as @Alexhostcom, today FOSSVPS and MetalVPS offer free Chisinau, Moldova IPv4/IPv6 VPSes.
Thirteen KVM VPSes are available, each with 1 dedicated IPv4 and 1 dedicated IPv6 address. Traffic is unmetered.
Of the thirteen available VPSes, eleven have been pre-made by hand on the command line with cloud-init and virt-install. The node and the eleven pre-made VPSes are running Ubuntu 24.04. Two VPS slots have been reserved in case some super awesome person really needs another OS besides Ubuntu.
The VPS time period for this offer is until October 30, 2025, and might or might not be renewed.
There might be a second round of NAT IPv4 plus IPv6 VPSes offered on this server.
Please check the below Yabs and NWS test results for the VPS specs. Something you can't see from the tests results is that this node has eight spinning rust hard drives deployed in hardware RAID 10.
To apply for a free VPS, please post in this thread. In your post, please explain (1) what you want to run on your VPS and (2) how FOSSVPS can view you as a positive and friendly community contributor. Also, (3) please post your ed25519 ssh public key in your request.
For support, please also post in this thread. If something needs privacy, please email @Not_Oles at the address on his profile or send a PM here.
The more effort invested into applications, the more likely they are to succeed! Additionally, the better the discussion in this thread, the more likely Alexhost will renew our node!
FOSSVPS is looking for additional server nodes and for help with system administration, client support, and application processing. Also, website help and financial contributions to the cost of formal registration (approximately $200; $50 received; $150 to go).
Free and open source software only.
White hat only.
Not for commercial use.
No service level agreement.
Ephemeral. Could disappear at any time!
Clueless™ Administrator!

you should stop wasting people's time when you never actually respond
@Not_Oles is not responding? You sure? Did you get shadow banned?
I applied and got the server in like an hour or so. Thanks @Not_Oles @Alexhostcom
I will be using it for personal WireGurad & NextCloud mostly.
YABS & NWS is pretty much the same as OP, so here are the results of the Region Restriction test.

Slackware4Life!!!
The Yeti has left the building.
Is there a trusted Slackware cloud-init qcow2 image available?
You think Slacky has cloud-init? Doesn't even use systemd yet lol. Probably slackbuilds for it, but to be honest I have never looked.
The Yeti has left the building.
Slackware is still alive? I thought it was long dead, since i never found a live repo mirror to install or update anything...
Works for me daily, they did have some mirror issues earlier but they cleared up.
The Yeti has left the building.
Well, i guess it's time to give then another try! Any distro recommendations? I used to love using Porteus but they seem to be dead for too long...
Hmm...
You know what, I usually pass on these offers because I think there are others who deserve this more than I do.
But I am thinking about trying out SSHFS over long distance.
I can run multiple IO tests and report back as my contribution?
I will send my pubkey if this is an acceptable use case.
DM us for private tracker invite.
I think the way to say "yes" is "shi". Anyway not "bu shi".
To remove any doubt, I mean "yes."
Can I put my weed in this?
The Yeti has left the building.
I think so! Why not! <)
@jmaxwell
By mistake, I reverted your VPS to its original "fresh" snapshot.
If I understand right, it means the pre-revert contents of your VPS have been lost.
The mistake happened because I was on the wrong server when I ran that command.
We have been using "vm1", "vm2", etc., on all the servers. Maybe ee need to change that to "servername-vm1", etc.
Probably you can get in with the original credentials previously sent. Please post here to let us know.
If you need help, I will try my best.
So sorry! Thanks and best wishes!
Tom
No worries, I’ll take a look soon.
Why?
Our FOSSVPS.org website has been updated so that it now highlights our wonderful sponsors,
node locations, VPS specs, and inventory.
FOSSVPS has 26 VPSes assigned and 8 VPSes available for assignment!
Thanks everyone!
I don't seem to be able to connect anymore. Tried with IPv4 and IPv6.
Why?
@jmaxwell
Apologies again! It seems I must have forgotten to turn your VPS on! It wasn't running when I checked the node.
I turned it on, and successfully got in as root -- both from the node and remotely -- each with both IPv4 and IPv6.
I checked that your ssh key indeed was present along with mine. Please feel free to remove my ssh keys if you wish.
Hopefully it will work again for you! I hope you have fun with it!
Best!
Tom
I've had tons of fun making my first PHP project, a simple, basic PHP login page and a page to export the output of
top! This on the test VPS at the @fmxm LA node. It seems to work! But there might be some security issues, so the firewall locks it down to one IP.
Soon I hope to try the same in Javascript, which will be my first Javascript project.
Probably not too many people would be interested in the code for these baby projects, but I want to set up a self-hosted version control web interface, maybe cgit.
Thanks to @fmxm, @alexhost, and @dan_onlyservers for their lovely server donations!
Want a free VPS? Please check the available inventory at FOSSVPS.org!
Can I use this to break stuff? I like breaking stuffs!!!
The Yeti has left the building.
@AuroraZero Sure!
FOSSVPS still has 8 free VPSes available in
Chisinau (Thanks Alexhost!
)
and in
London (Thanks OnlyServers!
)
Hola Not_Oles, I'd like to use the VPS to test a few small PHP projects I'm working on. I don't need a specific location; any location is fine. Let me know if this app is all I need. I'll be on standby.
Hola @jureve! Any details on your PHP projects? Are they open source so that you could give us a link to the repo? Is NAT IPv4 plus IPv6 okay for you, or do you need dedicated IPv4 plus IPv6?
As can be seen at FOSSVPS, only 6 VPSes available!
IPv4 NAT + public IPv6 is fine.
@jureve No details on your PHP projects? 🥲
Hello, if it is possible to get a free server, I develop bots for telegram, the server is needed for testing so that later I can roll out working versions to the main server. Thank you.
Hi @aski!
Welcome to LES! Nice to meet you!
Any details on your Telegram bot projects? Are they open source so that you could give us a link to the repo? Is NAT IPv4 plus IPv6 okay for you, or do you need dedicated IPv4 plus IPv6?
Thank you!
Tom
For now the projects are closed, private development to help develop their chats and channels, if the bots are successful and useful, I will post them for everyone. Right now the simplest server and IPv4 will be enough
Hi @aski!
I'm looking forward to reviewing your request as soon as your project is open sourced.
Thanks very much, again, for your request! Welcome, again, to LES!
Best wishes!
Tom
Two VPSes, the last currently available in Chisinau, have been assigned to applicants on Nodeseek.
Thanks again to @Alexhostcom for their kind donation!
Possibly more Chisinau VPSes might become available if more IPv4s are donated, if another server is donated, or if someone moves elsewhere.
Right now, FOSSVPS still has 3 NAT IPv4 VPSes available in London. Two of them, if I recall correctly have applications which are pending. Thus, there might be only one remaining fully available. Thanks to [OnlyServers] for their kind donation!
Best wishes!
Wonderful Alexhost Update!
Important!
The Chisinau node needs to be rebooted. Probably the reboot will happen about or after 3:00 PM UTC on Saturday, September 6, 2025.
Another post will be made here prior to the reboot.
The previous time the Chisinau node was rebooted, a power bump was needed to get the node restarted. That might happen again.
If you need the reboot to be delayed, please post here.
New Giveaway
Five IPv6-only VPSes on our excellent Alexhost node in Chisinau, Moldova:
How to apply:
In case you are wondering, there are no strings attached to @Not_Oles's offer. As for the VPS uses, you can use the VPS with the IPv6 address to run your project site, since most ISPs allows access to IPv6 websites.
If you are still worried, I recently found out that you can use cloudflare to "proxy" your website so it'll load on both IPv4 and IPv6, all the while using a proper CDN for your project site.
Good morning! Reboot time has arrived!
The Chisinau server again seems offline following the attempted reboot.
I opened a ticket with Alexhost requesting a hardware reset.
More before too long!
Following attention by Alexhost support, the Chisinau server is again online. It responds to ping, and I can log in.
virshseems to think that all the current VMs are running. If anyone is experiencing any trouble, please let me know!
Thanks to the Alexhost Support Team for helping!
Sorry @Not_Oles these are nat correct?
The Yeti has left the building.
No. Dedicated IPv4, not NAT.
The VMs shown above from
virsh liston the Alexhost Chisinau server are the currently allocated, dedicated IPv4 plus IPv6/128 VPSes.I just made the first IPv6-only VM. I need to test a little more, and then 5 IPv6-only VPSes will become available.
There also are going to be 5 more dedicated IPv4 plus IPv6/128 VPSes available "soon." Thanks again to alexhost for the additional 5 IPv4 addresses.
Damn man that is generous!!! Good luck man I know you put alot of work into this and your other projects>
The Yeti has left the building.
@AuroraZero Your support means a lot!
Maybe it might not sound so super wonderful to say, "It means a lot!" But as we go through life, how often do we meet kind, honest, generous, dependable, "real" people?
Fortuitous meetings happen for me from time to time. I am lucky to know you!
Now I want to get one!
Ding!
5 - 1 = 4
I have to update the website. And . . . and . . . and. . . .
Hello!
There are 5 new IPv6-only Ubuntu 24.04 LTS VPSes ready to go on the Alexhost node in Chisinau.
Since the recent node software update and reboot a few days ago, there has been some trouble making new Debian VPSes, which no longer boot. Also, there may now be some file I/O instability on the existing Debian VPSes. Nevertheless, the new Ubuntu VPSes seem fine! Also an OpenBSD VPS seems to be working excellently.
It again is time for me to sleep, so I will be back tomorrow. Hopefully I can review the existing requests and try to assign some free VPSes.
Have a wonderful day! Best wishes!
Tom
Hey Tom,
Rest well you deserve it man. I would be interested in an ipv4 to use for a code/dev server. If you do not have the room or need anything let me know.
The Yeti has left the building.
Sorry to go offtopic, but that reminds me, @Not_Oles did you try to run VS code web on one of the servers yet? If not, give it a try.
Demo: https://vscode.dev/
Instructions/code on: https://github.com/coder/code-server
Since you are now using ubuntu, it should be easy enough to setup and run!
I'm about to put a few new dedicated IPv4 + IPv6/128 up on Alexhost in Chisinau. Of course, I'd be delighted to give you one. But, it might be kind of far away (too much latency) for an interactive graphical application? Of course, it might work great!
As an alternative, if you don't mind sharing it with me, and if you don't mind Debian unstable, I've got a 2 vCore Ryzen 9950X that we could try. Well, if you don't like Debian unstable, we could reinstall it. This VPS has a pretty good connection, and it's not too far from your location.
Have a nice evening!
@somik, maybe not the same thing, but, did you see https://lowendspirit.com/discussion/9738/how-to-install-vscodium-with-code-server-on-a-debian-12-vps/p1 ?
So I got code-server all set up and then didn't use it.
I have plan9port installed on NetBSD-current so I can use
edandpand some other junk left over from old unix. Not all the stuff shown is correctly described as "old unix." Butedandpcertainly are.I kinda like my monochrome green terminal. Green makes me happy!
Reminds me of my childhood, when my school was teaching us to write programs in Microsoft QuickBASIC and we used to change the IDE color to be black and neon green
I basically need it to upload the hosting panel to and get it sorted for lxc and maybe kvm. Just a skip once the lxc is done.
