The vote (among staff members) has to be unanimous.

There is no greed and no corruption among the staff members.

It depends on how you look at it. The atmosphere in a team is always better if there are people you trust and can work with, rather than people who annoy you. The internal staff section is usually a world within a world, with constant interactions, just like among visitors in the public part of a forum.
Personally, but that's just me, I wouldn't complicate things that much. If someone caught my eye (as a reliable, serious person who's a lot online and may be willing to cooperate), I'd ask another admin for his opinion. If he agreed and there were no serious objections from the moderators, I'd then approach the person.

I get the feeling he would be able to go into heated discussions without making it personal or losing his head, which is a must from a moderator.

That is correct. During the Chief/Joel era I wrote articles for LEB and tried to moderate LET. Both @KuJoe and I were new at those positions, and when Chief/Joel decided to sell and vanish, we were left in the dark without guidance.
