LES Wiki - work in progress.

edited January 2021 in General

The LES wiki is going to be very much a work in progress and will take over all 'list posts' in time, I have made it visible for now with a top bar link.

Eventually, when I move talk.lowendspirit.com to lowendspirit.com it may replace the current 'blog' based on grav completely, that is still under consideration though.

Suggestions on content for the wiki are welcome please :)

    FREE Softaculous Premium by BuyVM

@Francisco and @seriesn , please correct If I get it wrong

  • That sounds Great @AnthonySmith _/_

For Wiki Suggestions, something like Installing Selfhosted Open Source stuff on LowendVPS providers

  • "how to"s lots of "how to"s

vpn, proxy, dns, torrent, xamp, wp scripts, media server installs, hosting scripts installs, proxmox , ipv6 only proxmox, proxmox ha?.....

  • Well, I don't think it is the right format to have the actual guides in but it will be great to link to them when they are written :)

  • A Self-Hosted Category.

Have you tried turning it off and on again?

You're gonna take a mega SEO hit on that if I'm not mistaken. Subdomains are scored separately so basically start from zero

A 301 Cloudflare Page Rule should take care of passing the Link Juice in sometime

  • Great job @AnthonySmith

    How can we contribute?

  • @kuroneko23 said: Users can contribute (write) to the wiki as usual?

nope, at least not directly, I can't afford the time to moderate the spam and dead stuff.

That was what I was hoping, but the place is only a year old I can live with the 'hit'

@ferri said: How can we contribute?

I guess the only way I can think of right now is to make a wiki contributions category when it gets approval I will take the content and push it into the wiki.

  • Sounds great =)

    Just some ideas:
    Self-Hosting
    Backups
    DNS
    Security Hardening/Tips

  • if anyone has any scripts or configs they use and want to share that would be great, I am not talking about self-made software suites but more like backups scirpts, one liners to do xyz, nginx/mysqld conf's etc etc

Thanks, yes, it will take a while and good people like you to help get that info on the site, I am seemingly incapable of keeping all of these things in my head these days :) good job I am making a directory eh!

  • In regards to how-to guides to install generic xx service or program, don't see a need for them here as there are already 1000's of same guides already available with a google search. If anything, more vps specific how-to's such as Anthony already mentioned : "backups scripts, one liners to do xyz, nginx/mysqld conf's etc etc.

    one liners to do xyz

One liner to break OpenVZ 7 so bad that it would require a reinstall:

    rm -rf /etc/network/interfaces; mkdir /etc/network/interfaces

I found this when I'm trying to stop SolusVM from overwriting my config. Apparently this breaks the container and it will never boot again.

One liner to stop SolusVM from messing up the config:

    chattr +i /etc/network/interfaces

    Tested on Gullo's Hosting Canada.

I spent like five minutes. All I did was run virt-host-validate.

Today I have a new customer who wants Stripe. I can imagine Stripe being harder than running KVM inside LXC. :) Any tips on Stripe?

  • @yoursunny said: One liner to stop SolusVM from messing up the config

yep, that can do the trick however I would suggest that if you need to edit the network config, you probably should not be cheeping out on OpenVZ anyway.

  • I will have a look later I may have some bash scripts lying around. Maybe not the most actual ones but still working I hope.

Sorry :( not a lot I can do about that, at least it is not a functional change.

Without such article, the whole Wiki wouldn't have any sense.

  • Reminded by this (awesome) idea, wasn't a lowendwiki project started last year? I recall some conversation with @uptime about it. Maybe the two projects have some concurrence?

  • mikhomikho AdministratorOG Bash Me Gently

LEA had some scripts that checked hosts (providers) for certain changes.

Not sure if that wiki is still available, perhaps wayback machine to find more info?

The scripts are long gone but I’m sure we can, as a group fix that.

Use this link in wayback machine to some more text about it.

Kind sir, that line should probably read "On behalf of people who find it hard to read"
    it covers a wider spectrum:

    • those who cannot read because they have sub-optimal vision
    • those who cannot read due to language limitations)
    • those who cannot read because they are.... you know the types

Yes, that project was https://lowend.wiki/ , but it seems to be down now. In practice, it was mainly a site to learn about different providers. This said, I'm not sure whether it ever gained much traction.

"A single swap file or partition may be up to 128 MB in size. [...] [I]f you need 256 MB of swap, you can create two 128-MB swap partitions." (M. Welsh & L. Kaufman, Running Linux, 2e, 1996, p. 49)

  • I will volunteer time to edit the content so that words are top-notch. The market isn't looking too good now, so I have started my own copyediting and copywriting gig. I will contribute these skills to this project. @AnthonySmith let me know when content starts populating on the wiki.

If anyone needs a highly competent copyeditor or writer, do get in touch. LES folks will receive preferential pricing. I do a broad spectrum of editing and writing, from blog articles to academic manuscripts. If you prefer to learn how to write and edit your own work instead of relying on me, I am happy to arrange writing instruction and consultations too.
