Did you know that before price gauging was coined into a hot term for stoking the news readers, the real deal, eye gauging, existed in the far west, and apparently was more common than pistol dueling according to wikipedia? The objective was rudimentary: poke the eyes the fuck out of your opponent's head before he does the same to you. Supposedly the winner would thence demonstrate his intellectual superiority to the loser, proving his point over the two's argument. Since the fight didn't require expensive pistols to participate, it was the preferred form of dueling among the US peasants.

Now, I don't know how the hell that practice was spun into referring to a banal price markup.
