Looking for Hourly Cloud Provider for Coder.com (US West / Tokyo)
Hello everyone,
I am currently looking for a cloud/VPS provider to host a Coder.com dev environment with Terraform, with the following requirements:
- True hourly billing (destroy compute/shelving to stop billing, only pay for storage during stopped hours)
- Dynamic / Ephemeral IP or NAT (IP must be detached when stopped to avoid idle IP fees)
- Reliable Terraform provider / API support
- Good connectivity to South Korea (US West, Tokyo, etc.)
I checked TierHive, but ruled them out due to limited server size choices and API constraints. I am currently considering Hetzner Cloud (US West), but I'm looking to see if there are other suitable options.
If anyone has recommendations or suitable providers for this setup, please let me know or send me a PM.

Hi @sanvit! For a few days, until August 8, I have a Debian E5-2650Lv3 dedicated server with 128 GB ECC, 2 x 960 GB SSDs, 300 Mbps idling in Santa Clara. You are welcome to share the root and install whatever you want. It's not available for very long, but it might get you started until you find something more suitable? If you want it I need your ssh public key, please. Best wishes!

It auto-deploys a fresh VM with VSCode-SSH inside. Think of it as a selfhosted github codespaces

MetalVPS is doing great! There is a newly rented dual E5-2690v4 bare metal server with a 10Gbps connection in Ashburn running NetBSD-current. This server's 56 threads seem to compile all of NetBSD-current including a new toolchain and X Windows in about an hour and twenty minutes. There is 128 GB DDR4 ECC RAM, so I sometimes am trying putting the /obj directory on a RAM disk, which seems to save about twenty minutes.
Another fun little project has been my daily ~100M upload of recent file modifications. I've been using scp to put the upload from my Chromebook's Crostini container to FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and NetBSD. The upload times range from about 6 minutes to about 2 minutes. Yesterday, with a few kernel network tweaks, and using netcat instead of scp (the file being uploaded is pre-encrypted), NetBSD swallowed the upload from my Chromebook in 22 seconds. The best time so far has been 7 seconds, from the Debian server I was offering you to the new Ashburn server, so not from my Chromebook and not from my local connection.
