What do you do with idle VPS? central projects, protocols, donations?

Howdy.

For reasons that will become obvious fairly soon, I am about to have a bunch of short use VPS servers that become very idle after use.

I started wondering what can be done with them, ideally something that makes a difference however small, while also being host friendly, not hammering io or CPU time.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Any good open protocols that could use resources, nodes for projects, peer tube type stuff etc?

Well both fun but requires a longer term commitment.

  • I run globalping probes on my idle or low-usage servers. And I torrent Linux ISOs (for real), on hosts that allow it. Also running mirrors for open source projects. Just make sure if doing the latter two that you watch your bandwidth if not unmetered.

    • Globalping probes
    • Syncthing relay server

I speak fluent sarcasm and broken logic. | I would agree with you, but thæn we’d both be wrong.

    My current uses:

    • Remote searxng - don't want the frequent hits to go out from home IP
    • http proxy - to get around some geo challenges
    • projects - e.g. my recent tls.obsidian.place by nature of what it does can't have cloudflare / proxies in front of it so needed something isolated & far away from me

    That's probably the best bet

  • If i did something with them, they wouldnt be an idle vps anymore, so I don't do anything with them.
