Euronodes, introduction

Hello everyone,

We are Euronodes Ltd, Cyprus-registered, RIPE LIR (AS199053). Primary footprint in Lisbon (ONI datacenter, our biggest deployment), secondary in Prague. Smaller presence in Frankfurt and Madrid.
We sell VPS

(here comes obligatory paragraph Claude told me to write about how we do it for community and absolutely not for profit
As an old Slav myself who heard English first time at the granpa age, Im using LLMs to polish the writing)

Our background is not in hosting, we were running a rather massive data operation related to ship insurances.
Then unspecified virus of unknown origin caused cruise ships to dock for days/weeks idle and insurances had to chip in.

At least that's how we understood the loss, and the fact that we were left with 200 idle enterprise nodes to repurpose.

We are not a particularly cheap provider.
But when in April all the others raised prices, we suddenly became one of the cheapest in the whole market. Sit on the river bank long enough, you will see the bodies of your enemies floating down

Our equipment and infra is not particularly "low end", it was built with a different purpose in mind. Majority of it still serves maritime industry (now Cyprus and Portugal start making sense on both sides of the Mediterranean)

We also sell virtualization clusters, for small providers that have to patch various dedicated servers and figure out how to build real cluster with interconnections, ring 0 and 1 on separate networks and in general, be pro.

Those clusters are dedis, optionally in the same rack, with additional 10Gbit cards for rings 0 and 1, and access to our internal Ceph storage over 45Gbit.
Each server has a ZFS array of 8x1.92TB SSDs, ARC cache typically 384-512GB, and RAM between 768GB and 1TB depending on the node.

There are no i7, i9, Ryzens, i5, i3, Celerons and Motorola 68000 (or 68020 for AGA fans) servers available.
When the fleet was built, it had a purpose to stay as stable as Compaq and serve forever.

We are not planning to expand into desktop-grade CPUs, our fleet must stay unified and ready to serve both purposes (maritime and hosting) at any moment. I'm fully aware that now all that matters is GHz, and I'm driving a Scania into the Porsche club.

I familiarized myself with the history behind LET/LES, who is who and why is what is. I found it fascinating. Especially that despite decades in Unix, these are my first weeks in social media. For a boomer like me, yelling at clouds doesn't mean AWS/Azure.

P.S. I almost forgot: it's https://euronodes.com

Hopefully yes. Most of the hyperscalers capex is financed by corporate bonds. AI-infra collateralize their GPU.
I'm betting on NVIDIA turning their older hardware 1/10th of of their worth 6 months later (H1 vs H2 2026 HW) on inference workload.

Yes Im in Cyprus :) TierHive told me on Reddit DM to go and touch grass :D Cyprus is no-go for commercial hosting: 1Gbit symmetric for the datacenter costs, brace yourself, 8 THOUSAND EURO!
Yes, 8k for 1Gbit. So Limassol is covering only clients who pay their own connections (maritime)
    Charms of islands, I guess
As for Portugal, we have Sines connected and direct EllaLink to Brasil (Fortaleza) but not tested yet. Till end of May we will have it available for public access.

Back to this: well, different beasts. Thats why we opened Prague - Portugal latency to South/East Europe (especially Balkans) leaves a lot to be desired.

PT is much better if you want Mediterranean, North Africa, Middle East. But as soon as cables cross France and go East, latency drops and jitter increases.

We were renting a few of those white changing-room lockers in Hetzner (they call them "racks" for some reason) and we loved it, but if you wanted anything quality, the prices were rising to absurd levels. Electricity also.

So we moved to Prague just to cover East/South Europe.

Poland is a better location for mainland Europe.

I would need to know the requirements for the nodes. And this time its not a marketing speech - the issue with our nodes is the unified fleet.

I don't presume you need 6-8x SSD and 512GB-1TB RAM, which is basically the only thing we have plus some variations.
If you check https://euronodes.com/dedicated you'll notice the pattern.

How the big guys do it: they get your order, put you on 12/24 month contract to lock the money, then go to serverschmiede.de or servershop24.de and buy exactly what you ordered from the configurator. Markup on lease vs buy is the business.

We dont have this luxury for 2 reasons:
    1. Enormous legal power needed to recover the money from client if excrement hits air circulation unit
    2. A lot of paperwork that will discourage most clients before we reach half of the process

And besides, thats not our business model. So we came with a better idea, hear me out:

You go directly to serverschmiede or servershop24 or wherever in the EU, buy as cheap as you want exactly what you actually want, and send it to us.
We rack it, give it power, network, IPs, remote hands when needed. €69 (heheheh) + electricity for 1U monthly.

You get the hardware you actually need at retail prices. We get colocation revenue without the capex risk.
Now: colo is not cheap, you can have probably lower prices somewhere - the difference is that you can just get 1U and rest of the infra is delivered (switches, routers etc) - so whatever you fit in 1U will be at the monthly cost of cheapest hetzer box.

So back to the subject: Lisbon, Ceph based, repl x3 hybrid crush rules 1x SSD primary 2x HDD replicas, fast enough to be, well, fast enough :)

    EDIT: Just checked, my apologies

In all seriousness: you should reconsider shipping to the datacenters from outside of the EU.
It involves EORI and this is major PITA.
It's definitely easier to just get the same stuff inside of the EU, then shipping is cheaper and cross-border frictions dont exists.

One of our clients shipped Solana validator fro the US, worth gazillion of dollars (validating Solana costs more than this whole blockchain value it seems) and we were all going crazy for WEEKS before it was mounted

Any plans for IPv4 subnets from LIR other than Cogent? I was able to only find subs leased from them, which is unfortunate.
I like to avoid Cogent wherever I can due to their AUP which they are known to use against customers of hosting providers who have transit or lease subs from them.

Yes, we are checking the options. And there are not many, we were renting from Cogent for many years (direct to datacenters ASN, we didnt have our, but still for years) - just convenient and pretty good price. But we are checking the options around, public hosting is different beast and have different needs

I think we newcomers shouldnt get involved into this at all.
We can be forum for few geeks somehow expanding or we can be shrinking society of people grieving the past - but it's hard to be both.

The old drama belongs to people who lived through it, not us.
We didnt invest our time, energy, some hopes etc into a project for years and get betrayed, we cannot now what OGs here felt and what they went through

At least this is my position
Unless we personally get hit by either side and will have to choose, ofc
Until this time we should focus on making this project thrive, so our OGs can see that it all had meaning

I admire people who can write something and this still sounds good after few years.
When I grow up I will also learn to write without reading it later with cringe

Thats good sign - you are getting smarter :) If you look at your posts from few years ago and think "Dam, I used to be so clever!" - thats wrong sign ;)

I once told him that www originated in Europe, in CERN, because I also wanted to show that Im geek.
Oleg said "Oh you mean that Brit who stripped half of the SGML because couldnt wrap his head around it, called it HTML and in typical British fashion stole the idea like they usually do no matter if those are Ghurka warriors, Polish Enigma or chicken Tikka Masala?"

I never tried to impress him again. Then I've been told he's old Atari and Amiga demoscene coder. Few guys here just live it, it's not a job for them
