@VirMach said: This is something we haven't addressed yet. I'm trying to think of every way we can bring it down to a meaningful level without just auto crediting and closing the tickets as it will of course upset a lot of people.
I hesitate to levy criticism as you're clearly working extremely hard and are going through a bad time, but has an alternative been considered to automation that often breaks things and auto-closing tickets which annoys people and probably makes them open even more tickets?
For example: automation that works and covers all/most cases, temporary increase in support to go through the tickets (even briefly), etc.
I understand what you're saying here and for this to have worked, for the most part, we would have had to invest a significant amount of time in doing a lot of that beforehand.
Temporary increase in support was difficult to coordinate. It would have ended up with people receiving frustratingly bad advice. I'm still trying to come up with a plan in sorting tickets and providing actual responses to avoid auto closing everything again. It didn't work out last time but this time we have the added advantage of everything actually finally settling down instead of other changes being stacked on that cause further grievances.

I've not closely followed the migration process, but one thing I've noticed is that a few people seem unsure of their new IP following migration. Was the new IP not notified prior to the migration with some notice?
For my vps7 migration from ColonCrossing ATL to Flexential ATL:
I pressed "Ryzen migrate to New York" button, it gave secondary IP but didn't migrate.
There was a notice that migration out of ColonCrossing may happen sometime, but not when.
One day, the machine went offline.
Billing panel shows new IP in Flexential ATL, which differs from the secondary IP assigned before.
Secondary IP disappears after several days.
For my vps1 migration from ColonCrossing LAX to DediPath SJC:
I pressed "Ryzen migrate to San Jose" button, it immediately migrated and showed IP, which worked.
There was a notice that some IPs in SJC may change, but not when.
One day, I rebooted the OS and it received different IP from DHCP. The previous IP worked up until this point.
Now I'm using the new IP from DHCP.
In vps1 step 3, I suppose the renumbering happened sometime ago but I'm unknowningly using somebody else's IP until I rebooted.
I was not told about when the renumbering would occur or what's the new IP, until I did the reboot myself.
One major problem that caused a lot of these added issues was the fact that SVM or perhaps rather KVM virtualization in general operates in a way where several steps of reboots have to occur. When it's being done for a lot of services at once, things are bound to go wrong. We had to adjust timeouts based on each server's load and it wasn't always perfect.
We couldn't just set a 5 minute timeout per VM to ensure it goes 100% smoothly because if a hundred plus have to get done at once, that's a 10 hour queue.
If at any time this "broke" in any way, it left many servers in various partial states and there were multiple steps of adding and removing IPs. Sometimes one step would break but not another. We had to re-code everything over and over and over so depending on when it was done, and with the other added bugs, the situation was unpredictable. Now add in human error of having to keep track of these states over a hundred plus servers.
I didn't code out the IP change script for the migration without data, but when reviewing the code it looked fine. The multiple IP issue seems to be related to how SVM deals with timeouts and overlaps. Sometimes it'd assign an IP, but not really assign it in a way where it got locked away from it being re-assigned to another and the default behavior seems to be it'd just do it all over again, hence some people got multiple functional IPs.

Fun fact about Guinness, I had a friend come over from Ireland and nearly spit it out. Apparently our "Guinness" here in the US is watered down and the "Guinness Extra Stout" is just what they have as regular Guinness there. Not sure how it is in other parts of the world but it's pretty funny they had to tone down the flavor for the US market.

Truly sorry to hear that. I just wish they were in any way reasonable with their actions and I still regret not doing something about it a few days sooner. Not that we knew it would happen when it did or how it did, but we were already in the process of acquiring servers from our new partner just in case, a few days before it happened and we were just about to send out communication a few days earlier but ran into issues with some of the Chicago deployments that we were focusing on instead.
The original plan was to continue paying for them as we had been doing and pay for two sets of servers for a few months for a smoother transition.

Pretty shady & sad.
I remember Raindog interviewed us for his "Chia/Crypto is skyrocketing hardware pricing. The end is nigh" post but we essentially disagreed with that narrative and found it respectful that he still published our view.
In his defense, I don't think it was meant to be a hit piece but rather what I assume (based on the title, I didn't actually read it) to be a poorly researched "hot" topic meant to drive quick and easy views to the website, an attempt at trying to remain "relevant." As for RN, perhaps he was specifically prohibited from making any comments. That tends to happen, even on mainstream news sites. For example, you probably won't find any Jeff Bezos related scandals on the Washington post, I assume.
Here's my philosophy on negative press: I like it because it helps ignorant customers stay away. It's mutually beneficial.
I used to probably be part of that segment of customers. I used to look at reviews and unless something was rated 4.5/5, I stayed away, but the more I learned, I realized that a 3/5 product could end up working much better for me as long as I'm part of the 60%~ of people that it worked out great for and that just meant I had to do more research. Since then, there's been so many products, restaurants, hotels, and more that I've purchased and thoroughly enjoyed and I find that the products that do receive blindly stellar reviews have a host of problems or just don't fit my use case, often at much higher prices as a result.
New website is up. There's going to be SSL issues and a lot of placeholder content on the new theme. It looks pretty generic but I figured after years of me trolling on the design and making it progressively "unique" which others may call hideous, it probably actually reached a point of hurting sales when our website was on a light blue background that pierced the eyes with eye-watering red as the main Ryzen-themed splash. So it's good to be "normal" looking again.
We received a mixed bag of locations and specifications which will help us meet more specific requirements. I've noticed a lot of people setting their "minimum requirements" extremely high, with some people saying they want 2x1TB SSD and Ryzen processor, which is fine, but please understand that by default means a long wait.
I've provisioned a good number of them with many more still on the queue and being worked through.
The module for basic functions is still broken so that means no boot/reboot functionality but you can put in a ticket for that for the time being.

The people who built the theme used a Wordpress theme editor that's gotten pretty popular. As in, they didn't really code it out and used a theme builder. Essentially, we paid for someone who just went in and added a bunch of icons and re-arranged other plugins which we could've done ourselves but more power to them. Anyway, what I'm getting at is I already know about the copyright at the bottom but to edit it, it requires an annual subscription to the actual plugin they used to create the website. I'm sure I could go in and manually edit it but it's best to keep everything in the editor environment. We already bought the "Pro" version of the plugin, I just haven't uploaded it yet (yes, it requires re-uploading a completely different "version" of the plugin instead of just inputting licensing.)
Missing slash after .com on pricing_image.png and (probably) missing httpS on info-img-2.png, both returns 404 and slows shit down.
Aware of the SSL issue on that one image. It was causing a redirect loop if I set our website as https:// in the settings for it so I have to figure out what's causing it. Could be NGINX, Cloudflare, or some WP plugin trying to do auto SSL redirect or a combination.
I agree on the background color for that, I just haven't found where to edit it and didn't want to spend too much time on the finishing touches as I'm still focusing on getting services back online. I did have it globally as being white but didn't like the white background on the main bar before scrolling, I think dark blue looks better, so I just need the sticky version of the menu to be darker as well and we should be good there.

I've actually got two stuck in that state, one from NY and one from CHI. So yeah there are a few still out there at least with issues.
This was probably the single reason I went with this theme. We've been meaning to have a more "interactive" map for a few years now but never got to it. Once I'm done with the LG, it'll go in a box right below it.

I honestly wanted to just potentially offer them to take in the customers if they didn't do everything in their power to be difficult to approach. Without getting into detail, even without them doing what they did which was insanely unprofessional to say the least, I knew it was still going to be a messy transition so I wouldn't have had a problem with doing what's best for the dedicated server customers and giving them an option to move to being direct clients of theirs to provide the best experience and avoid migration.
Obviously though they had a different idea and attempting to speak to them logically seemed to be a non-starter.

Yeah I noticed that as well. I figured anyone can find the IP if they really want it for an attack, Cloudflare isn't very good at ensuring it doesn't leak and there's tools for finding it through various methods unless you spend a tremendous amount of time locking everything down perfectly. Even our old site was susceptible.
I just wanted to get it up and running at this point and didn't want to spend a lot of time combing through. Most the pages got generated before I used a domain so they'll have that showing until I go through and delete them or do some mass query at this point.

Off network websites for critical stuff like status pages, etc in a pinch are a basic logical thing to do. Then again, so is taking free money someone is trying to give you for no effort.

Note, this is a general message about how I feel about all companies that may operate in this way and it doesn't mean I'm speaking about any one company. There will always be companies in the world that are ran by the "businessman" type, sacrificing absolutely anything, including any semblance of logic and reasoning, to increase revenue. If it doesn't increase revenue, the only other option is that the customer leaves and to them that's normal. They'll just go to the next customer, rinse and repeat.
They could be making a million dollars a year in profit and the profit could be naturally increasing as the customer continues to pay the same outdated rates for a worthless product, and they won't budge. For new customers, they'll give that same product at a loss if they could because that increases revenue. If they lose the old customer and all that profit, they don't really see it like that for some delusional reason. All they see is more inventory, and they'll be happy re-selling it to a new customer for a fraction of the price because that takes them from $0 to a number greater than $0 which is increasing revenue. But to LOSE money on an existing source of revenue? That's heresy. That would be NEGATIVE money in their puny little minds. An existing customer wants to only maintain a portion of their services? All some businesses would see is that the customer is now decreasing their revenue, so it's a bad customer, cut them out completely, all or nothing. Even worse to these types of businesses, the customer tries to reasonably speak about the matter. They're so sleazy that automatically as a subconscious projection, any genuine discussion comes across to them as bluffing, empty threats, or an attempt at weakening their hands. The only time they may pretend to become willing is if it involves an increase in revenue.
I will never understand it but I'm sure they learned and mimic all that from some business school textbook.

Reminded me of a Hindi idiom, which seems apt about that post on LEB and people talking shit.
कुत्ते भौंकते रहते हैं और हाथी चलता जाता है.
Translation: Dogs keep on barking (talk shit) while the elephant keeps on moving ahead (makes progress towards success).
@vyas could create a podcast/gaatha on this whole episode as a case study when the elephant (VirMach) reaches its destination successfully.
Have you tried turning it off and on again?Just to throw some of that LET flavor here.
I AM LOOSING MILLIONS.

i have been told data can't be recovered, rip, now i knows the importance of backup
but thankfully I have a small backup of my main project, now my "business that worth million" are working again
Oh god, lol, that title is enough for me not to click it.
Skype broke itself on my main computer for a while and I haven't cared to fix it. Basically it tried doing a force update that I promptly closed out of and that might've corrupted it. I'll try to reach out soon, thanks for the offer. Of course we're not interested in infinite free labor but could probably use (paid) help.
Yeah, raindog took some flack in the other thread about it but still seems to not see a problem with it and or even the fact that they are ignoring any issues with racknerd at the same time as they are doing those type of posts. (at least last I looked, I kind of got disgusted and stopped reading it)
Pretty shady & sad.
The last time I tried having a serious drink, something broke and I felt helpless. The other few times I guess I'm getting old but it just made me want to go to sleep after just one or two drinks and we can't have that
Fun fact about Guinness, I had a friend come over from Ireland and nearly spit it out. Apparently our "Guinness" here in the US is watered down and the "Guinness Extra Stout" is just what they have as regular Guinness there. Not sure how it is in other parts of the world but it's pretty funny they had to tone down the flavor for the US market.
Incoming cheap E3 servers. That's actually how we originally got ours, I assume, as they had them by the hundreds and frantically trying to give them away in bulk. I believe it was closely timed with a few summer hosts going out of business.
I'm assuming you're one of the unlucky few caught in the crossfires on the last few nodes. I delegates these moves to someone else but it looks like he missed at least one or two due to some miscommunication. I'm trying to pick up where he left off to finalize it.
I was actually thinking of you specifically when it happened since you had a close call with the previous termination situation that I helped you out with, I just hope you finally got some backups in.
I'm sure you gents will be able to work things out.
Looking forward to positive outcomes

Dedicated servers update.
Oh no, this page no longer works

Please... white background for the logo. I know it sounds crazy (background!??!), but this is not readable :P
Missing slash after .com on pricing_image.png and (probably) missing httpS on info-img-2.png, both returns 404 and slows shit down.

yes it was hideous to the point i only visit client portal. now looking great really
I bench YABS 24/7/365 unless it's a leap year.
At least this downtime had one good thing come out of it, new site looks great! I love the datacenter map.
(EDIT)
Might want to change the copyright at the bottom though
Oh no... the logo for the mobile view is quite bad...
Anyway, in all seriousness, if you considering getting a web dev, please contact me on Discord, happy to provide help.

seems like Gen 4 NVMe really helps with IO performance as well

Yeah, even us Canadians make jokes about drinking US water they call beer
Yep, that's what I figured they were doing and should give anyone considering using them a clue as to how they will be treated if they become their customer with all of this history.
I've actually got two stuck in that state, one from NY and one from CHI. So yeah there are a few still out there at least with issues.
Also aware of this, I think mobile version just uses the full size image, right? I just had the one old large logo and again, lazily used it for now.
This was probably the single reason I went with this theme. We've been meaning to have a more "interactive" map for a few years now but never got to it. Once I'm done with the LG, it'll go in a box right below it.
Correct. Since you already have the template, I can provide help to bring the site back to a professional state in 24-48 hours (Fixing all the small layout bugs etc).
Me and @MikePT are just trying to help our favourite provider.

Let me see if I can fire up Discord. I know I'm going to have too much fun chatting with you for hours though so maybe I should first finish out some of today's tasks.
Upcoming Raindog tell-all book: VirMach, the host that doesn't even use themselves to host their website!
From an outsiders perspective, from what I've gathered... They threw a hissy fit and cost themselves a bunch of money they had to do no work to get so they are now left with unused servers. So not good for multiple reasons as a business.
Off network websites for critical stuff like status pages, etc in a pinch are a basic logical thing to do. Then again, so is taking free money someone is trying to give you for no effort.
Common sense isn't really all that common.
The last time I hosted our website on our own rented servers, it went very poorly.
PM me your WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord or whatever. Let's get your desk organized.
Glad to hear you're ok!
Cheers
Hi @VirMach , Please help me migrate the service(View Ticket #895668).
