Believe me... they and others have tried. We check every use of EDU50 and invoice for the difference until we receive proof of .edu.

Many universities in India (particularly the Government ones) use the
".ac.in" domain. I recall this was a problem getting the student discounts for Google/ Microsoft offers early on.
The private ones smartly, went for .edu for email based on this experience.
