For teaching at MIT it has to be Camembert.

I think three is enough for me, one from 2018, just for fun. Not ready to give them all up yet and I might be keeping a partial eye on vps.blackfriday :D Yes it has been a rollercoaster, but if you're getting decent resources for a price of two…

Let me clarify this a bit further. As V in VROC indicates, it is essentially a virtual RAID implementation primarily targeted to NVMEs. It was designed to have a lot of throughput, low latency and minimal overhead, but not much qualify of life in mi…

I played around with a server like this a few years back and I will echo the comments above. Intel's Virtual RAID is no good. Now with FreeBSD, RAIDZ2 and bhyve it is a whole different story :) What is your "Forever Clueless™ Administrator…

I noticed the same thing after Debian 13 upgrade even without any templates. And there was no setting for it in the config file so the default must be 1.

Dave will need another garage soon for all his toys, but thanks for sharing the link. I'll definitely check it out.

My friend @Not_Oles it is nice to see you continue to be very active and providing great products! I have had some health issues and other setbacks this year, but hopefully I can continue to contribute to the community with BSD related things.

@Not_Oles keeps rocking the house, I love it!
-
My FreeBSD at @linveo has been absolutely rock solid for months and months so I cannot recommend them enough for great *BSD experience!
-
I've been fairly lucky with my VPSes and their downtime, but there definitely have been some hiccups. Hopefully he'll get his act together as Black Friday is coming up!
-
@Not_Oles You keep doing amazing work in this area. Massive props to you!

These offers look excellent. Time to get a credit card out!

(Quote) My friend, I started 1990 so I expected you to be around no later than 1989! You should really start using irssi as it is what I call 'the latest and the greatest' of console clients. irssi does the same logging per channel and a …

The ride last night was wild enough for me and my blood pressure medication, but it was insanely entertaining! Now I have a big problem in my hands though, what to do with all these VPSes. Is there such a thing as too many?! Perhaps @VirMach can do …

@DrNutella That is very nice to hear, congratulations! Let us know how it works for your application going forward. Like it was mentioned before the access to smaller files is generally ok as long as it stays within the rate limits, but as @Not_Oles…

(Quote) I would say that using a service account with rclone is an easier approach. That's what I have always done. https://rclone.org/drive/#service-account-support That setup is also portable meaning you can just copy the configs from one s…

Very nice my friend! As soon as @linveo adds the new template from @cmeerw I will go and get MATE environment going with NetBSD. For VNC startup you can create ~/.vnc/xstartup file which includes your commands like xterm, twm etc. The location can …

That sounds like a solid plan and I'm sure you are going to have a lot of fun with it. As a little twist, you can also try zfs-fuse to understand how much performance is being lost with the FUSE layer compared to a kernel module. Happy New Yea…

I was primarily interested in the performance numbers between ZFS and the others as you already did some measurements. I am not expecting any surprises really, but just curious to how they compare. Yes ZFS has its reputation of being a memory hog, …

(Quote) When ZFS gets upset, it is because it is not allowed to use up all the memory available

@Not_Oles how many systems you have with them as you are always having so much fun!

(Quote) Just clarifying my earlier comment further that when data is stored in an object storage and you need to access it, it will have to transfer the entire file over. You cannot access it partially for reading or writing. You can access chunks i…

(Quote) I think rclone is the easiest way to get Google Drive (or almost any other object storage) mounted to FreeBSD. It also has nice additional features like VFS caching and encryption of data. https://rclone.org/drive/ One word of warning is t…
