(Quote) I'm kinda pee'd off 'cos after trying numerous failures, I didn't have the exact steps that finally got this to work, on the Virmach VPS. So now, I'm struggling to recreate it on the Linveo one. Primarily due to me m…

Somehow, after a few hiccups, I got NetBSD to boot and install, via Linux (Debian 11). This was on an idle Virmach VPS with plenty of resources - now to try the same on the Linveo one..
-
(Quote) Goes off to break something.. ;)
-
^ I prefer the new layout, if nothing else. ;)

For anyone who doesn't mind playing: your mission, should you choose to accept it.. Using FreeBSD (as that's appears to be the easiest to get running), install webmin along with an appropriate firewall, with webmin working GUI. On the face…

Mmmm @ item 14. :)

Off to a great start with this location: (Quote) Have had responsive support, for a good experience. Thanks @HostMayo

(Quote) https://man.netbsd.org/NetBSD-10.x-BRANCH/boot.8 might glean some clues?
-
(Quote) As an avid semi-amatoor, it strikes me that you'd need to put in boot parameters, such as initram and rootfs.
-
(Quote) From the above self-install netboot.xyz method.. (Quote) Silly me just re-discovered the "Other BSD" templates - do'h! No luck with either, presumably with cloud-init still disabled on my VM. (Spoiler)
-
@linveo BTW, it's perfect having a decent amount of backup slots available. When experimenting at least one doesn't need to start from scratch each time there's a fubar. :+1: Good job! :D B)

(Quote) Therein lies the rub - I've seen some real nasty 'hidden gems' that get inserted, including ssh keys (don't recall who that was) and have fun tracing what the likes of OVH do. Much prefer using a minimal ISO, even though …
-
^ Yup this is how I booted netboot.xyz and my VM is in Texas That particular netboot doesn't have NetBSD; is there one that does? I was going to try the template ones, with cloud-init turned off but they vanished from VF. (Not a lover of cloud-…

I used netboot.xyz and got OpenBSD booted and (semi-)manually installed - hurrah! 1st time ever on OpenBSD (as I was on FreeBSD). What a very interesting old-skool automatic disk allocation; pre-defined X partitions on a server, even though I didn…

(Quote) Will do - I need zzzz first. :)
-
(Quote) I'll give it a bash. (Quote) I managed to easily install webmin, and enjoying 'playing' around.
-
Looks like I chose the easy option, guys - phew!
-
I was having "fun" last night, re-learning to live without systemctl and ip commands, amongst others. UFS: that's a first for me. :)
-
Off to a flying start but time for zzzz.
-
(Quote) I'll second that. :+1: Though I'll give FreeBSD a whirl (first), given the comments above.

(Quote) As Autumn is truly established here, I wish I was back there (if only for the climate). ;)

(Quote) Done. Thanks for the offer.

(Quote) Fake news! Was getting excited then realised the prices were nowhere near a Kansas, USA provider, let alone Online/Scaleway. Bummer. Here was me thinking I was on LOWEND Spirit; must be delusional. :/
-
(Quote) No takers? Mind you, given the "fun & games" with hestiacp DNS clusters (poorly documented/explained), then I may have to go back three decades to CLI admin duties. Gawd, even sysadmsh gave some assistance!

As I came from System V roots, BSD would seem a natural choice but 'mainline' Linux got in the way. There's the practicality of drivers for desktop use, along with essential programs (Apps, for the kids out there).

(Quote) Did someone say freebie?! :+1: :D
-
Ooh, awaiting a LES-priced VPS deal. Then our dragons can be linked. ;-)
-
Keeping topical (on a different thread), what web control panel(s) do people typically use, with BSD?
-
For personal use, save your money and use Control(Centos) Webpanel or the much more basic TinyCP.

Aww crap! Sensible forum=zero.

(Quote) I wouldn't try that after I've had a curry!

(Quote) THAN, presumably. :#

(Quote) Can't say fairer than that.. holds his hands up and apologises profusely. :+1: (Quote) Diplomacy is hardly my strong point! :s

A public apology is definitely in order.

(Quote) D'uh.. it's recurring. :/

(Quote) Good tyres! I somehow managed to grab Goodyear Transit Tour 50 for my e-bike, at a super price.
-
[ What a wuss, needing a cable tie to hold the tyre in place. Even my aged puny upper body strength and fingers can cope without! :cold_sweat: As for m'cycle tires;least said the better. :-/ ]

(Quote) I got that with my 1st attempt with deb11, though my VPS crashed midway during installation. Try a fresh install?
-
Anyone else experiencing apparently random shutdowns on AMSD035 ? It's happening during installation of OS as well as during openpanel install. Frustrating, as I need to start from scratch each time.
-
(Quote) Cheers. I'll give it another bash: might just be that AMS Virmach VPS getting hammered, as it's just back up. ;) [Edit] powered up for 5mins.. on dual CPU. (Spoiler)

Just tried debian 12 with openpanel. Server Load went a bit crazy and couldn't get the panel to load up. I may try again with debian 11,even though some of the documentation says 12 is the minimum requirement. (Nearly a necro post, which appea…

(Quote) Yup, that's the fella. :+1:

(Quote) I was intending to reinstall during/when the shit hit the fan, so not unexpected that I needed to reinstall an OS. (I wanted to switch from Ubuntu to debian now that openpanel has kinda seen the light.) Debian now ipxe installed, using @ehab…

(Quote) Unable to reinstall due to CDROM mount not working.I guess it'll be a chain load job. :-/
