Curious what everyone's decision making are on picking a hosted service.

My thought process is mostly around:
1. If it is for a personal/non-revenue project(s), go for as cheap as VPS as can handle it. (And I would migrate/upgrade it once I start to run into resource/access issues.)
2. I tend to move towards more premium options/hosts for VDS or Dedicated servers if it would hurt me financially or reputation if it were to perform poorly.

Thundermail is an email service (with calendars and contacts as well). We want to provide email accounts to those who love Thunderbird, and we believe that we are capable of providing a better service than the other providers out there. Email that aligns with our values of privacy, freedom and respect of our users. No ads, no selling or training AI on your data – just your email and it is your email.

With Thundermail, it is our goal to create a next generation email experience that is completely, 100% open source and built by all of us, our contributors and users. Unlike the other services, there will not be a single repository where this work is done. But we will try and share relevant places to contribute in future posts like this.

The email domain for Thundermail will be Thundermail.com or tb.pro. Additionally, you will be able to bring your own domain on day 1 of the service.

and https://www.theregister.com/2025/04/02/thunderbird_pay_services/ mentions

Thundermail, an email hosting service based on the Stalwart stack, to complement the Thunderbird client. Stalwart supports JMAP (JSON Meta Application Protocol), intended as a successor to IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol).

Will they manage to make it work in the long term?

1.What's the lowest recurring price you've seen or paid during previous Black Friday sales?
2.Are there usually good deals for US West locations (especially San Jose or nearby)?
3.Based on your experience, is it worth waiting for Black Friday?

To be honest, Vultr's entry plan is currently $5/month, which is actually $1 cheaper than GreenCloud's budget plan. That's why I'm wondering whether GreenCloud's Black Friday deals are usually good enough to make waiting worthwhile.

Reliability is more important to me than CPU or RAM.

Thanks!

In this thread we request that you tell us your experience with VirMach.

I made this thread so that people can say what they want about VirMach's service. That includes the good, the bad, and the ugly. You want to say the same thing ten times, knock your socks off. I don't know how much good it will do, but go right ahead.

Where I am drawing the line, for both sides, is personal attacks. The people who think VirMach is the worst host in the world can voice that, but let us try to reasonable in how we express that. If you attack a subject that is fine. If you attack on a personal level I am getting less comfortable with that as time goes on. This also goes for the people that think VirMach is ok as well. Let's stop attacking the people that don't, no matter how wrong you may think they are. We are all members of the same community let's figure out a way to act civil to each other even if we don't agree on this particular subject.

If you make an personal attack on another member that in my opinion crosses the don't be a dick line, your comment will be removed.

The current state of things VirMach

The below is not to be taken as official VirMach policy and is just provided as a way to assist members that do not want to try and find the related information in a long thread. I will try to keep this up to date. If you find obvious errors, please DM me.
For official VirMach policy please see the VirMach website.

PayPay Charge Backs

Under no circumstances should you initiate a charge back, or dispute a payment, through PayPal unless you understand that this action will cause your account with VirMach, and all the services in it, to be suspended permanently. You will also no longer be able to purchase any new services with VirMach in the future. IMO Just don't do it.

Flash sale provisioning

If you have purchased a VirMach flash sale VPS, it has not been provisioned, and still shows "Pending" in your billing panel screen. You should wait for your VPS to be provisioned. Opening a ticket regarding a pending VPS and/or posting your ticket number in this thread will probably lead to your VPS purchase being canceled and the purchase amount being refunded to account credit.

UPDATE

@VirMach said on Jan 25th, 2023:
Thank you everyone who was patient and sorry for the last bit of these flash specials taking so long to activate. I finally got some functional code to be able to activate these efficiently so that's why they were done quickly today. It's not that we were ignoring it, or had any bad intentions, it was just several failed iterations of solutions being worked on in the background.

Anyway, all* flash specials are provisioned now. There's still vserverid issue for most of the recent activated ones, which just means you won't be able to access the full SolusVM control panel yet, everything else should work. And some activated today are still waiting on due date to be adjusted. So please do not make tickets for these two issues.

*A little exception to this, the following have not been provisioned:

12 quantity for DALZ010 offer, 4GB RAM / 4 Core / 130GB Disk

1 12 quantity for NYCB041 offer (node is having problems still)

However, at this point in time, if you already haven't, feel free to contact us if:

There's any missing orders, make sure to provide all details such as invoice ID and transaction ID, so we can refund you

Yours is paid and still pending or in a weird halfway state like cancelled but paid, etc.

Incorrect specifications provisioned (these are super rare, maybe 1 or 2 out of each 1,000 so please make 100% sure first.)

For #3 if we get dozens of tickets claiming this, they'll all just be closed because it means people are reporting it improperly in which case you'll have to use LES support instead.

Regarding $0.25 3 Month VPS

VirMach said on Jan 15th: The $0.25 orders, there's still hundreds left. So far we got one $0.25 chargeback and maybe a hundred tickets from people asking for updates. Already covered but we didn't expect nearly 1,000 orders all in Tokyo with like half of them multiple accounts. I mean I guess I could say we did expect that as a possibility and it happened, so these are just being mass refunded. It's taking longer because I'm actually double flagging down a lot of people for their behavior here, like signing up for multiple accounts specifically to order a bunch of the $0.25 specials is obviously not okay and creating 3-4 tickets screaming about it is also something we're going to make sure sticks with your account in the form of a note.

Migrations

Currently paid migrations, with and without data, are not available between VirMach locations using the migration button in the billing panel. Although there has been no official statement by VirMach regarding this, I expect that after recent sales have been provisioned, and/or new nodes are brought on line this option may return for some locations. VirMach has stated that migrations to Tokyo will not be available until after more nodes arrive at the DC and are setup. There has not been any date given for when this should be expected.

rDNS aka PTR DNS records

Currently rDNS is not available in any location. There has been no date given by VirMach as to when rDNS would be available in the future. Consequentially members should not expect rDNS to be available from VirMach.

TOS Guide Lines

@VirMach said on January 23rd, 2023:
Easiest answer is if you have 1% or the node's dedicated disk amount, you get 1% of all I/O operations over like a day. That's not what it is, but the easiest rule of thumb to communicate. So 20GB on 2TB drive = 1%

2TB NVMe drive Gen3/Gen4, look up what it's capable of for the type of operations you do.

So if it can do like 500,000 IOPS for your operation type/size, then that's 5,000 IOPS in the example of having 1% share of the disk, there are 86,400 seconds in a day so 432,000,000 operations a day for that example of that specific type of operation. Anything more, we may decide to be lenient to some level where possible automatically.

Most cases if you get that message you're doing a lot more.

And of course over a shorter period of time, let's say 10 minutes out of 24 hours, there are 144x 10 minute chunks in 24 hours so let's say you do 10x more than that, it's fine as long as it's not more than 14x 10 minute chunks that do 10x more since any more and you'd average out more for the day. However, if you do 2 x 10 minute consecutive chunks where you're doing like 50x more that could still be problematic since at that point you're most likely also breaking the load and CPU fair use policies. Basically if any of that is confusing just refer to my first sentence and do your own math/conceptualization of it.

FAQ About VirMach Issues

Q. Is there a workaround for 'Invalid vserverid or username' when trying to access the SolusVM panel ?
A. Currently there is no workaround for this issue. It must be resolved by VirMach. Previous workarounds no longer work due to changes made by VirMach.

Q. 2FA is not working and I keep needing to use the backup code to get in to the billing panel. Why is your 2FA broken ?
A. Unsubscribe from 2FA and then logout. Log back in to the billing panel and setup 2FA again. Make sure to make a note of your new backup code.

Hello everyone,

I am currently looking for a cloud/VPS provider to host a Coder.com dev environment with Terraform, with the following requirements:

True hourly billing (destroy compute/shelving to stop billing, only pay for storage during stopped hours)

Dynamic / Ephemeral IP or NAT (IP must be detached when stopped to avoid idle IP fees)

Reliable Terraform provider / API support

Good connectivity to South Korea (US West, Tokyo, etc.)

I checked TierHive, but ruled them out due to limited server size choices and API constraints. I am currently considering Hetzner Cloud (US West), but I'm looking to see if there are other suitable options.

If anyone has recommendations or suitable providers for this setup, please let me know or send me a PM.

Thank you!

I'm looking for 3 (or 4) servers in Dallas, US.

For each one:

Different node.

RAM 4gb

CPU: 2+ cores. Something more powerful than an E5v4.

Storage: 80gb - 100gb SSD or NVMe.

Network: 1gbps minimun

Private network would be nice.

$5/m per server is fine?

I'm trying to build a database cluster because I like to suffer.

My compute resources are in Dallas so I can't use another location. Unless I move my dedicated servers... but where? and it would more expensive these days... can we kill AI?

There are rumblings on Reddit that the free tier has been and is being limited to less than half the allowance.

Also that it's a soft limit so AWS in crack style you start getting billed for overages.

https://docs.oracle.com/en-us/iaas/Content/FreeTier/freetier_topic-Always_Free_Resources.htm

Documentation has been updated and a few chat screen it's on Reddit show that the terms and calculator will follow.

So just a heads up, oracle are not known for playing nice, this could be nothing but just in case, manage your usage or you could end up with a nasty bill.

Thought I would post this so it can be updated as we go.

Could still be nothing.

Edit: now confirmed

You will start being billed from the 15th if you are over the NEW free tier ... enjoy your 4 days notice.

Hello. At C-Servers, we always look for ways to improve our existing offerings and to provide the best possible market pricing for our customers at any point in time.

The recent development on market pricing in several fronts, with relevant increases accross purchasing several components and data-center space, along with some specific improvements we wanted to add to our offer, have led us to do a fundamental change on our most purchased product:

On the next days, C-Servers is departing from VirtFusion and becoming platform-independent.

We'll change our customers to a new platform, C-Servers EagleKey, with several technical advantages and an entirely different, simplified and fully integrated approach to our offering. We're bringing our most-sold product range in-house and adding to it extra possibilities, including Dedicated Servers (soon) and Resellers for our products (also very soon).

Over the past three weeks, over 140.000 lines of code were written and many tests and hardening were conducted, function-wise and security-wise, in order to guarantee our customers the best possible experience. Our chosen basis, .NET 10 LTS with Blazor, also allows us to do runtime changes with minimal to zero disruption at any point in time and to correct and react to any issues very quickly, which is an advantage. Our agent on the nodes, written in Go, allows our customers to have more performance available by not having to run PHP on every dedicated server.

We're also introducing several brand-new technologies for the benefit of our customers: this includes Cloud Hypervisor KVM with microVMs (Direct Linux Kernel) and several RAM improvements both from CHV and from us on this new launch. A Debian 13 VM under CHV, with the optimizations, has reduced from around 220MB to just 85MB without removing essential packages - providing you more room for what you wish to do.

Our NAT management also changes, from iptables to nftables, with improved response and technical conditions for our IPv4 NAT customers and a new button, "Flush NAT", automatically available for customers, in order to address a long-reported rare technical bug with connections on NAT. IPv6 provisioning will also start to be automatic on Zeta.9 Coventry and general dual-NIC servers as well.

The management interface at the WebStore will not change; it's only the Portal, and several underlying specifics, that change.

Most importantly: OS changes to CHV are opt-in, meaning that the templates are there should you wish to save on RAM on your system, but by default you'll still stay on QEMU/KVM; and the migration will incur zero server and zero IPv6 downtime, with a mere 15-second downtime for NAT IPv4 only due to the automated change from iptables to nftables, when it happens.

Lastly, this change allows us to publicly commit to this very important announcement: our low prices will be kept low. No increases for 2026 at C-Servers! We hope these news make you happy.

This is just a small summary on the upcoming improvements. Full details on the many, many technical specifics, reasoning and improvements are available here.

Let's C-Servers independently, shall we?

Have a great weekend!

I started wondering what can be done with them, ideally something that makes a difference however small, while also being host friendly, not hammering io or CPU time.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Any good open protocols that could use resources, nodes for projects, peer tube type stuff etc?

Hello LES community! 👋

I'm a Python developer currently working on an open-source Telegram Music Bot. I'm using Pyrogram, PyTgCalls, and FFmpeg to let users play high-quality music in voice chats.

I joined LowEndSpirit because I want to learn more about Linux server administration, resource optimization, and how to efficiently host Python applications on VPS environments. I'm particularly curious about optimizing FFmpeg for low-resource servers to keep the bot running smoothly.

I'm excited to learn from the experienced members here and hopefully contribute back to the community as I grow. Thanks for having me!

I was about to post a new offer, really more to provide some updates, it's probably not good, @msatt was probably right

I decided to just post a single TierHive thread instead. I might still post some offers and specials from time to time, but for now, I will keep it contained to a single thread for updates etc, as most offer threads seem to turn in to that anyway.

So what's been going on recently?

Updates in live bullet points to keep it simple

IPv6 was added, its free, you get 1 x /64 per location and can then add individual addresses from that /64 to any VPS in that location, elastic IPv6 coming based on user take-up over 6 months, Current user take-up on IPv6 is 1.5% This is measured by the number of users that have allocated at least 1 IPv6 address to a VPS.

Users can now allocate 5 additional NAT ports in addition to the SSH port.

Users can now manage the internal forwarding of ports, so for example, if you are allocated 2345 you can have that forward to 8080 internal if you want.

You can now download your SSL certificate from the HAProxy directly. I don't fully understand why anyone wants this, but it's a very popular request.

We have introduced burst buckets on IOPS and Network as of today for network and disk, you now can now double your tier limit for 5 seconds continuously, any VPS that existed before today will need to change their network and disk tier down and up again to gain access to this (Sorry, it's a pain in the ass to do restrospectivley) so if medium tier is on 300mbit for example you will be able to do 600mbit for 5 seconds sustained, then when you idle again below 300mbit your bucket empties and you can burst up again on demand. (Hope I explained that ok)

You can now copy the IP, Port or whole ssh string separately in the UI, aparently that was annoying for Windows users.

Crypto mining detectors are now deployed on all nodes, load dropped globally by 50% in the first hour haha.. just wow.

We decided to remove the network disk options and the sql service, and the mail relay, even fewer people use this than use IPv6 so it's not really worth the code maintenance and complexity. It might come back one day, for now its not worth it, you will still be able to attack backups as network disks.

We plan to decouple the backups from the VPS so that you can put a VPS disk image on cold storage.

Added an FAQ which is being built following support tickets to provide real answers without needing to open a ticket, but you can if you want anyway.

Things we are playing with now that may make it out of the sand pit version.

A static hosting layer, which will likely just be free to any user with a positive balance, details still in progress.

We want to start charging less for shut down VPS, obviously we still maintain the mesh elements, the disk/data, and the firewall and port reservations and have to account for the fact that you can boot it at any time, but initially I am thinking 50% discount for powered off servers, it helps us keep it cheap if you make the effort to shut down when not using it.

unikernels - not me playing with this, I think its an interesting idea but lets see where it goes

Bring your own image automation, this will have 2 modes, give us the key or password for another running VPS somewhere else and we will try to import it, obviously its best if thats in rescue mode but not absolutely needed, and just give us the url to a qcow2 or raw image and we will do the rest.

long long long term, personal project I am working on multiplexing VNC for audio into a custom html5 client using a single WebSocket, but this is actually sort of for another project but would be cool in TierHive.

It makes me very sad how few people have enabled DHCP or mess with the DHCP options for your scopes, it took me bloody ages to get it working over the whole /24 regardless of location, so I will probably end up being free, if people still don't use it, ah well, its done, nothing new to add.

network page for network tests and mesh status.

And thats it, thats my update, probably missed 100 minor things but at least I have a thread to do it in now.

Please post in this thread. Please explain what you want to do on our server.

When you post in this thread about what you want to do on the server, please also post in this thread or email @Not_Oles at the address on his profile: links to your website, to your source code repository, and to other online profiles. Please remember that, quoting from the Rules above, "@Not_Oles must know who and where you are." Some people send scans of government and university ID. Other people send other or additional things. Unfortunately @Not_Oles can't see many pages on Twitter, Facebook, and on LinkedIn because logins are required. Sorry for any inconvenience!

One of our friendly Administrators here at LES, Mason, is a great example of somebody whose request for an account would be accepted right away. Thanks to @Mason for kind permission to link to his pages.

a community presence here at LES https://lowendspirit.com/profile/Mason,

a repository at https://github.com/masonr.

A little flexibility helps a lot. I haven't checked to see whether Mason's public pages contain an address with a street number. Maybe someone else does things a little differently than Mason but still has a public presence and an identity that's easy to find. There might be a few LESbians who are well enough known here that not much else is necessary.

I appreciate that many people here on the Low End have important and fully legitimate concerns about privacy. I respect those concerns! Happily there are many options available here on our beautiful Low End for people concerned about privacy.

Thanks Hosteroid! Thanks LES!

We want people who have never tried BSD to give it a shot. Also, we ask for other people's insights, adventures, use cases, and general feedback on BSD. We want to survey members and providers to find out who here already is using BSD in any part of their setup.

These days, BSD includes the following popular distros, and more:

Things happened, life, CVE's, work, and time and resources were diverted, so it's been a bit slow but a big push was made over the last week to get almost everything finsihed up.

There are still a few things to do that really need to be fully tested on a live VPS for optimisation and a few tiny but important plugins to finish that would also benefit from being live.

I was just about to spin up another VPS on hetzner to probably end up taking over as the main LES server, then I see that the prices went up +300% they are charging around $20 now for a fairly basic 2GB VPS, its a bit silly, sorry hetzner... you are not LE* anymore, so we need to move.

Looking for recommendations, currently LES lives in Germany, yet looking at traffic patterns, about 70% is north america based, so I am thinking the best option is to look for East Side USA, part of me kind of likes the idea of Ashburn... feels like a good home for old internet things

Does not have to be Ashburn but that would be a bonus, I probably would not want to get any further west than Dallas, though.

Looking for strong recommendations, I was going to put it on quickpacket, but they only do dedicated servers and it feels like LES should really be running on a VPS.

Lots of other Ui fixes and theme fixes and also some standardisation, side bar has been updated, more for trending and offers, and a lot of irrelevant or duplicated UI stuff has been removed.

Theme toggles on the top bar now, no password needed, as well as a slider, if you want none of the animations or anything related to karma that has a visual impact, you can have it.

The support system and blog system is built directly into vanilla now also.

It's not really THAT different to how it is now, at the core, it is the foundation and groundwork for a much more self-moderating community; not everything connected to that is in, yet, but the foundation for that to happen is, once live it will become easier to do these updates and have a better test environment.

Once V2 is live, I will start to drop some of the old resources and drop the price, google adverts are still enabled for none logged in users, so far that gave a total of £5.20 over 24 days, so probably about £6.50 by the end of the month.

On that basis, I will be looking for ways to better monetise, probably either in the promoted listings or buy a square type of things, prices will be low, and karma can be used, and it will be open to everyone, but I will try to keep it tasteful and non-flashy as much as possible.

Before any of that, though, I need to work on the numbers, or why would anyone be here

Also as a heads up, part of this rejig is going to make a little bit of a conflicting mess with the old tag system and the new karma system, they can both exist together but it looks a bit funny, I will be starting to remove tags that are not really in use much like the senpi and content creator / writer tags, and reduce the old tag system to functional only.

@yoursunny troll will be turned into a 1 of 1 karma badge, only he will have, unless he decides to pass it on (That will be possible)

We will also have host-specific decorations if you want to show support for specific hosts.

So at some point, without much warning, this place will go into maintenance mode or just offline while I panic and realise what I forgot to consider when migrating everything, hopefully not more than a couple of hours.

That's all for now.

Hello, LowEndSpirit community! It's me, Lowend-Shortner-Idiot.👋

First off: I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I figured there are a lot of web hosts and web enthusiasts here who might be interested.

Today I'm releasing an open-source tool that I think quite a few hosting providers and sysadmins around here might find useful: DA-Register.

It's a modern, database-free self-service registration portal built specifically for DirectAdmin hosting servers.

🚀 What is DA-Register?

If you run DirectAdmin and want a sleek, lightweight self-service registration page for new users without needing a heavy billing system or complex database setup, DA-Register handles user creation seamlessly via DirectAdmin's native API.

Key Features:
* Zero Database Setup: Runs 100% on local PHP/JSON flat files with thread-safe file locking (
flock
). Sensitive log files are natively protected with
<?php exit; ?>
wrappers.
* DirectAdmin Native API: Integrates directly via cURL (
CMD_API_ACCOUNT_USER
). Works great with restricted, scoped Login Keys!
* Privacy & k-Anonymity HIBP Checks: Checks password breaches using the Have I Been Pwned API directly in the client's browser via Web Crypto API (k-anonymity). Plaintext passwords never leave the user's browser.
* Anti-Abuse & Rate Limiting: Built-in Token Bucket algorithm, fail-open DNS MX record checks, disposable email blocker, and native support for Cloudflare Turnstile, ALTCHA, hCaptcha, reCAPTCHA & MTCaptcha.
* 20+ Supported Languages & Modern UX: Automatic Dark/Light mode detection, live password complexity checklist, accessibility widget, and a client-side i18n engine.
* Invite-Only Mode: Optional access control with single-use or multi-use invite codes.

🔗 Links & Resources

📦 GitHub Repository: https://github.com/agxl/DA-Register

🌐 Product Page: https://da-register.panellayer.com/

🧪 Live Demo: https://demo.da-register.panellayer.com/

💭 I'd love your feedback!

I'd really appreciate it if the hosters, providers, and sysadmins here could take a look and let me know what you think! Any feedback, feature requests, or contributions are very welcome.

📜 A quick personal note...

Fingers crossed that there won't be any lawsuits, cease-and-desist letters, or legal warnings over this one! I've had more than my fair share of legal headaches, warning letters, and legal claims recently, so I made extra sure to thoroughly verify API terms, disclaimers, and GDPR compliance before releasing this. 😅

I actually have dozens of completed projects sitting on my hard drive waiting to be published. However, given recent experiences, I need to carefully run legal clearance on each and every single one of them before I can release them into the wild.

Let me know your thoughts or if you give it a spin! Or was it, like all my other projects, just a useless idea of mine?!

Cheers,
Andy

Disclaimer: AI was used in part for the translation and proofreading.

AI Agent Antipatterns: What 9.47/10 CSAT taught us about finetuning

We just published a writeup on what ~6 months of running Väinämöinen, our agentic AI sysadmin, taught us about LLM antipatterns, finetuning and where self-hosting actually stands for a small hosting business.

Some bits from the post:

9.47 out of 10 Customer Satisfaction.
Our own Väinämöinen is doing excellent job since February, excellent customer satisfaction with just 19 minute median responses over the past 30 days. On budget hosting where the typical response time is measured in days, not even hours, let alone minutes.

It is all about the training, and most antipatterns are not antipatterns at all; Just the preferences and biases of those who trained it.

Our doctrine takes 60k tokens just to load and typical small task needs around 350k tokens. Each ticket generated around 80k output tokens.

Since February Väinämöinen has collected over 30 000 individual memories proacross over 220 MiB of internal corpus.

On self-hosting:
We came to the conclusion that under 768GB VRAM we won't even consider running a large model for this. Kimi K3 would offer 1M context but probably needs closer to 1TB of VRAM. So we wait for enterprises to start liquidating old gen hardware, like we always do.

Full post:

Happy to answer questions on any of it. The antipatterns section comes from real, repeated, documented failures, not theory.
