My thought process is mostly around:
1. If it is for a personal/non-revenue project(s), go for as cheap as VPS as can handle it. (And I would migrate/upgrade it once I start to run into resource/access issues.)
2. I tend to move towards more premium options/hosts for VDS or Dedicated servers if it would hurt me financially or reputation if it were to perform poorly.

LES v2 is live - I tried to keep it as close to the old one as possible visually; anything that was a big change at least has an option to toggle for those that hate change (myself included)

In no particular order.

Themes on header bar

You no longer need to go to your profile to switch.

Themes in general

• The dark theme, light theme and grey theme have been fixed; they all had issues, with odd colours, and they have been somewhat simplified for future changes. The layout width has also been standardised to work well with 1080p or vertical screens.

• vBulletin themes added - I made the mistake of starting on these first; it was stupid. There will be bugs, and I discovered how hard checking all the other changes would be from then on against 5 different themes for every change, i have other themes planned; they were moved down the list until the functional work is finished.

Show LES (Submit a Link)

• This will let you make a short post, it will not take up as much space, they all go into general and its a hat tip to the best part (In my opinion) of hackernews, if you find something cool and want to share it, share it, no need to make a huge post about it, you can post up to 3 per day

• You can toggle these off/on in your view with the S in the header and you can see ONLY these with the Show LES link in the header:

Thanks is now Karma & Karma system

• Thanks have been replaced with karma (and converted already) essentially works the same way, except you can up vote down cote and boost

• An upvote or downvote costs you nothing; giving karma comes off your total.

• You can give up to 10 Karma points independantly of a simple up/down vote which csts you nothing, obviously you need to have it to give it.

• If your account reaches -25 karma, it is suspended, you are warned at -10

New users & New Host Tags (Karma)

• When new users join they will go in to a new members group: https://lowendspirit.com/categories/new-members they are required to fill out a short form as part of registration, which automatically creates their first post for them, if they get +3 upvotes or someone gives them 3 karma, they become a regular member, if they get -5 they are banned, they have no rights to post in any other section until they are essentailly allowed in by the community.

• New hosting providers is now also karma-based; anyone with a member tag can apply to become a hosting provider, https://lowendspirit.com/categories/provider-tag-requests again a form that is completed to request a tag, +10 gets you a provider tag, -5 rejects your request.

Karma gate:

• When posting offers hosts can now decide who sees them with a new markdown tag:

• You can require an upvote to reveal part or all of your post
• You can block users with negative karma
• You can require a minimum amount of karma to see it.

Karma Store

• Empty right now, but you will be able to essentially spend your karma/thanks on custom badges, your own titles that you make yourself and equip them in whatever order you want.

• In the future, this will also be useful for free hosts when I extend it to validate users and set conditions or provide coupon codes or links etc.

• We will also start adding hosts icons so you can show support that way.

Karma Slider & Animation level Display

• The slider has 4 levels, it allows you to set the level of the new karma animations you want to see, none or everything.

• The karma animations essentially add hype
  to popular posts and users

The side bar

• Honestly not much to say here, just removed the crap I know no one uses, I will refine it further and added some simple "top" posts based on up/down votes etc

Blog

There is a new Blog system https://lowendspirit.com/blog I am going to start populating this on a fairly regular basis with big news and little tech articles and yoinking interesting posts etc for the blog (all credits will be given)

Ignore User.

• This was already in anyway but you can now click on someone username and from their profile use the dropdown to ignore them if you do not want to interact with them, you will still see posts from people you dont ignore that quote them but you can self modderate who you interact with.

Word Filter

• Backend now has an autosed so I can s/dicks/flowers/ on post or edit, highly unlikley to ever be used but it was a quick one when I was playing about at the start, it exists, my hope is that it remains blank, but if we get persistant shitty hosts spamming their links I can also sed them to barbie.com

Opcache

• We now have opcache on the backend, making things fly a bit better

Search

• I found out about manticore, pretty cool, almost no ram, made the search a lot more useful after finding someone is searching for every letter of the alphabet on a regular basis 1 letter at a time on occasion, that takes care of that.

Turnstyle

• New registrations going forward will no longer require manual admin/mod aproval, tomorrow I will enable CF Turnstyle for registration and combine that with the new members karma requirements as above.

Flagged posts

• You, the end users, can see when a post has already been flagged and how many times, if it reaches 10, the post is then hidden except to mods, mods can also clear the flag count.

Necrogate

• Any post that has had no activity for 30 days will require the poster to also complete a justification for necro posting.

Support

• Support (HESK) has been replaced, it now is built into vanilla, support link at the top, when you open a request all mods/Admins are notified, anyone can respond.

Provider directory & Host profiles.

• https://lowendspirit.com/registered-providers this now shows a proper directory of hosts along with a filter for services offered.
  

• Reviews will also soon be pinnable to hosts profiles.

• Hosts are listed according to karma (Highest first)

• Hosts will see a red exclamation on their icon on the top: this is so that they know to go and complete their profile, a basic profile is shown if they dont.

• I am going to start removing provider tags after 1 year of inactivity, first I will be sending a PM to all hosts to invite/remind them we are here, if they don't care, or don't exist anymore, no problem.

• Hosts can add their staff and role to their company/profile.

• Host profiles look different once complete and all socials get linked, great example already from @oloke https://lowendspirit.com/profile/oloke

• This section is only a framework right now, I am going to significantly build on this over the coming months.

HOST YOUR IMAGES HERE!

• You no longer need to use imgur etc, please, stop using them

• Just right-click or screenshot and copy-paste the image into the comment box and it will auto-upload and convert to a forum-optimised WebP file (Gifs included) max filesize 5MB

• You can also upload using the picture icon on the comment box and even give the image whatever alt tags you want (Optional)

• External image links still work too.

Offer Posts & Auto sink (Up/Down votes)

• Offer posts now can get hype and karma like other posts the more hype they get the more visible they become (unless you turn all that off)

• Posts now also go less visible and lose colour if they are downvoted, and they start to auto-sink

• If any post gets -20 downvotes, it is hidden.

VPS

• VPS moved from Hetzner to OVH because Hetzner is not LE* Friendly anymore, for half the price I got the same specs in Vint Hill, VA, USA, with a rolling 7 days auto backup and snapshots and an extra 50GB disk, given that over 70% of the traffic is from north America, hopefully thats going to be ok.

• We are now on PHP 8.4 on Debain 13 and MariaDB 11.8, I spent a full day optimising everything as much as I can; the VPS is the same spec as the Hetzner one, 2 vCPU, 4GB Ram, 40GB Disk + 50GB disk for user uploads which I can extend if required in the future.

Other

• I am still a long long way from done. I know there are a ton of issues to fix, but that is the cost of progress; the core is working, that's the main thing and over the coming weeks I will bug-fix daily until we get stable before adding much else.

• I appreciate all the bug reports and general feedback, when possible, add as much info as possible: screenshots, URL's, platform, browser it really helps.

• My main goal was to lay a framework to build on, and I think I did that; everything was based on the notes when I asked for opinions and some of my own perspective, having been on every side in every role. on both green forums.

• Please, if possible, respect the fact that I am trying, even if you don't like it, that I have limited resources and this is not full-time for me; I will take criticism if it's constructive. This is personal to me I am personally invested in LES.

Self Moderation

• I have done and will continue to do as much as possible to turn this place self moderating, via tools or rules, if you dont like a person or a host, you now dont have to see them, if you dont like something, you can impact it with negative karma, community flagging takes down posts, you decide who is here now, and who you have to interact with, many of the new features simply either can be turned off or ignored if you really dont want them.

• The mod role will stay we always need humans to ultimately step in for certain things, but hopefully with less pressure.

​Writing this with @mikho to share some important news regarding the future and management of LowEndSpirit.

​Mikael and I took over LES from @AnthonySmith back in 2021 (side note: I swear that was just a couple years ago... nope, 5! Holy smokes!). We had big plans for the community and future of LES and made some (small) strides, but ultimately fell short on bigger projects due to work/family/life events for both of us.

​To be completely candid, Mikael and I simply haven't had the time or energy required to give LES the active management and attention it truly deserves. Over our time at the helm, we’ve pretty much made zero significant changes to the website or the community -- I bet the wayback machine can attest. Whether that was for better or worse is up for debate, but we did keep the lights on and the servers humming. This is, without a doubt in my mind, in large part due to the insanely talented, level-headed, and brilliant moderators that have donated countless hours of their time back into the community to keep Ant's original vision alive -- shout out to @FrankZ, @bikegremlin, @MichaelCee, and @AuroraZero for all their hard work over the years!

We are extremely proud to say we kept our biggest promise to you all: we kept this community entirely ad-free, and we made sure it cost absolutely nothing for participating providers to advertise with us here (cough... unlike some other places... cough).

Now... with all that said... some astute observers have already noticed we slapped the Admin tag back on Anthony. After some discussion between the three of us and now that Ant is back in the low end hosting game, we have decided that we will be passing the LES torch back and will be transitioning ownership of LES and its assets back into his hands. We believe this to be the best possible outcome to give LES the much needed attention that will be required to remain fresh and relevant.

The transition of Admin duties and ownership will take place gradually over the next few weeks. Mikael and I aren't vanishing, we will be around to help out however possible to ensure a smooth handover.

For reasons that will become obvious fairly soon, I am about to have a bunch of short use VPS servers that become very idle after use.

I started wondering what can be done with them, ideally something that makes a difference however small, while also being host friendly, not hammering io or CPU time.

I'm a Python developer currently working on an open-source Telegram Music Bot. I'm using Pyrogram, PyTgCalls, and FFmpeg to let users play high-quality music in voice chats.

I joined LowEndSpirit because I want to learn more about Linux server administration, resource optimization, and how to efficiently host Python applications on VPS environments. I'm particularly curious about optimizing FFmpeg for low-resource servers to keep the bot running smoothly.

I'm excited to learn from the experienced members here and hopefully contribute back to the community as I grow. Thanks for having me!

I decided to just post a single TierHive thread instead. I might still post some offers and specials from time to time, but for now, I will keep it contained to a single thread for updates etc, as most offer threads seem to turn in to that anyway.

So what's been going on recently?

Updates in live bullet points to keep it simple

1. IPv6 was added, its free, you get 1 x /64 per location and can then add individual addresses from that /64 to any VPS in that location, elastic IPv6 coming based on user take-up over 6 months, Current user take-up on IPv6 is 1.5% This is measured by the number of users that have allocated at least 1 IPv6 address to a VPS.
2. Users can now allocate 5 additional NAT ports in addition to the SSH port.
3. Users can now manage the internal forwarding of ports, so for example, if you are allocated 2345 you can have that forward to 8080 internal if you want.
4. You can now download your SSL certificate from the HAProxy directly. I don't fully understand why anyone wants this, but it's a very popular request.
5. We have introduced burst buckets on IOPS and Network as of today for network and disk, you now can now double your tier limit for 5 seconds continuously, any VPS that existed before today will need to change their network and disk tier down and up again to gain access to this (Sorry, it's a pain in the ass to do restrospectivley) so if medium tier is on 300mbit for example you will be able to do 600mbit for 5 seconds sustained, then when you idle again below 300mbit your bucket empties and you can burst up again on demand. (Hope I explained that ok)
6. You can now copy the IP, Port or whole ssh string separately in the UI, aparently that was annoying for Windows users.
7. Crypto mining detectors are now deployed on all nodes, load dropped globally by 50% in the first hour haha.. just wow.
8. We decided to remove the network disk options and the sql service, and the mail relay, even fewer people use this than use IPv6 so it's not really worth the code maintenance and complexity. It might come back one day, for now its not worth it, you will still be able to attack backups as network disks.
9. We plan to decouple the backups from the VPS so that you can put a VPS disk image on cold storage.
10. Added an FAQ which is being built following support tickets to provide real answers without needing to open a ticket, but you can if you want anyway.

Things we are playing with now that may make it out of the sand pit version.

1. A static hosting layer, which will likely just be free to any user with a positive balance, details still in progress.
2. We want to start charging less for shut down VPS, obviously we still maintain the mesh elements, the disk/data, and the firewall and port reservations and have to account for the fact that you can boot it at any time, but initially I am thinking 50% discount for powered off servers, it helps us keep it cheap if you make the effort to shut down when not using it.
3. unikernels - not me playing with this, I think its an interesting idea but lets see where it goes
4. Bring your own image automation, this will have 2 modes, give us the key or password for another running VPS somewhere else and we will try to import it, obviously its best if thats in rescue mode but not absolutely needed, and just give us the url to a qcow2 or raw image and we will do the rest.
5. long long long term, personal project I am working on multiplexing VNC for audio into a custom html5 client using a single WebSocket, but this is actually sort of for another project but would be cool in TierHive.
6. It makes me very sad how few people have enabled DHCP or mess with the DHCP options for your scopes, it took me bloody ages to get it working over the whole /24 regardless of location, so I will probably end up being free, if people still don't use it, ah well, its done, nothing new to add.

And thats it, thats my update, probably missed 100 minor things but at least I have a thread to do it in now.

There are still a few things to do that really need to be fully tested on a live VPS for optimisation and a few tiny but important plugins to finish that would also benefit from being live.

I was just about to spin up another VPS on hetzner to probably end up taking over as the main LES server, then I see that the prices went up +300% they are charging around $20 now for a fairly basic 2GB VPS, its a bit silly, sorry hetzner... you are not LE* anymore, so we need to move.

Looking for recommendations, currently LES lives in Germany, yet looking at traffic patterns, about 70% is north america based, so I am thinking the best option is to look for East Side USA, part of me kind of likes the idea of Ashburn... feels like a good home for old internet things

Does not have to be Ashburn but that would be a bonus, I probably would not want to get any further west than Dallas, though.

Looking for strong recommendations, I was going to put it on quickpacket, but they only do dedicated servers and it feels like LES should really be running on a VPS.

Updates.

Lots of other Ui fixes and theme fixes and also some standardisation, side bar has been updated, more for trending and offers, and a lot of irrelevant or duplicated UI stuff has been removed.

Theme toggles on the top bar now, no password needed, as well as a slider, if you want none of the animations or anything related to karma that has a visual impact, you can have it.

The support system and blog system is built directly into vanilla now also.

It's not really THAT different to how it is now, at the core, it is the foundation and groundwork for a much more self-moderating community; not everything connected to that is in, yet, but the foundation for that to happen is, once live it will become easier to do these updates and have a better test environment.

Once V2 is live, I will start to drop some of the old resources and drop the price, google adverts are still enabled for none logged in users, so far that gave a total of £5.20 over 24 days, so probably about £6.50 by the end of the month.

On that basis, I will be looking for ways to better monetise, probably either in the promoted listings or buy a square type of things, prices will be low, and karma can be used, and it will be open to everyone, but I will try to keep it tasteful and non-flashy as much as possible.

Before any of that, though, I need to work on the numbers, or why would anyone be here

Also as a heads up, part of this rejig is going to make a little bit of a conflicting mess with the old tag system and the new karma system, they can both exist together but it looks a bit funny, I will be starting to remove tags that are not really in use much like the senpi and content creator / writer tags, and reduce the old tag system to functional only.

@yoursunny troll will be turned into a 1 of 1 karma badge, only he will have, unless he decides to pass it on (That will be possible)

We will also have host-specific decorations if you want to show support for specific hosts.

So at some point, without much warning, this place will go into maintenance mode or just offline while I panic and realise what I forgot to consider when migrating everything, hopefully not more than a couple of hours.

Our own Väinämöinen is doing excellent job since February, excellent customer satisfaction with just 19 minute median responses over the past 30 days. On budget hosting where the typical response time is measured in days, not even hours, let alone minutes.

It is all about the training, and most antipatterns are not antipatterns at all; Just the preferences and biases of those who trained it.

Our doctrine takes 60k tokens just to load and typical small task needs around 350k tokens. Each ticket generated around 80k output tokens.

Since February Väinämöinen has collected over 30 000 individual memories proacross over 220 MiB of internal corpus.

On self-hosting:
We came to the conclusion that under 768GB VRAM we won't even consider running a large model for this. Kimi K3 would offer 1M context but probably needs closer to 1TB of VRAM. So we wait for enterprises to start liquidating old gen hardware, like we always do.

Some of you saw the original Hypervisor V2 thread when we launched it as a lightweight KVM control panel. Big update: it grew up. To catch you up to speed...

• OnePoundEmail launched in 2022 as an MXroute reseller, offering SmallEmail for One Pound per month.
• We slowly grew since then as understandably, I worked on regaining trust in the community having left the industry before.
• We now have close to 300 registered users and would be happy to take on many many more.
• In July 2023 I posted about some personal circumstances that led to a lack of attention to the brand. Extra help was contracted for the rest of that year, bills were settled in advance, subscriptions created where applicable, things looked a lot better.
• In September 2023 I followed up and posted about plans to re-do the website, make the affiliate program better, possibly rebrand, make bigger packages, acquire more customers/brands and add some additional services.
• I did manage to get most of that done. The website was updated, affiliate program enhanced and a couple extra packages added. On top of that, I reduced annual pricing, added discord and live chat, fixed some pesky issues, simplified the control panel navigation and added Crypto, EUR and USD payments.

We're now over a year after that post and have had a very successful Black Friday campaign, acquiring a stupid number of new customers, and it's time to use the higher number of users to our advantage and improve the service where possible.

Here are some base plans for 2025:

• Completely fill the entire knowledgebase. I've taken some inspiration and asked for feedback about how to approach this, and have started to section it out. We have categories for starter information, DNS setup, transferring guides and troubleshooting. As well as the usual sales, billing, etc. The plan is to reformat every single article and add images. I've already started the formatting process on a few dozen.
• On the topic of knowledgebase, each article will have a video equivalent. I do have a OnePoundEmail YouTube channel - it has a few guides on there. It gets 100s of views every month and I haven't touched it in almost 2 years. Time to change that.
• Again sticking with the theme of documentation, I plan on publishing a full contingency plan. Everything from the potential of MXroute kicking me to the curb to me being fisted with a christmas tree (maybe not). The plan is to be 100% transparent with what would realistically happen in certain scenarios.
• UK domain management. I started the application process with Nominet, only to realise I am not budgeting for the one-time and maintenance fees associated with that. It won't be worth it, so an alternative option for managing UK domains in the client portal will be implemented.
• Launching a blog. I had a blog, somewhere. I will be making a new one for more general topics.
• Rely less on promotional pricing. Black Friday has increased the client numbers by a lot. Discounts will be less frequent and hard hitting going forward to focus on stability and healthy growth.

Here is an insight for the first part of 2025:

I have always used keys because it's more convenient but I was just wondering how keys are more secure as compared to an extremely strong password (say, 24 characters long comprising of multiple symbols, uppercase+lowercase alphabets and numbers all mixed up randomly)?

IPv4 is available for $1/month, routed /64 IPv6 allocations are standard. The cheapest server is 768MB/24GB disk for $3/month, the most expensive is 16GB/512GB disk for $64/month. One vCPU with all, and it's not a fast one. I generally just do annual billing, especially for accepting cryptocurrency.

Payment is Monero, Bitcoin, or Bitcoin Cash. Can also send cash in the mail. I may start offering USDT and maybe Ethereum. Surprised by how many people want to pay with USDT.

They are only forced for non-logged-in users.

If you enable it, you get a supporter tag as a thanks, but no pressure, no one likes adverts, I get it, the revenue will first pay for LES costs and then go towards community projects, promotions and advance buy downs to bring better deals to the community.

I won't go into it again, the reasons have been discussed. I hope this is is least intrusive model possible, if it turns out to be an issue I will change it, already not pumped about the google overlay shit for EU users.

The PHP and MariaDB conversion is complete, I now have a fully functional vanilla 3.x (if you can still call it that) running on PHP 8.4.22 and MariaDB 11.8.8, even the polls plugin works

All the plugins are now going to be written in the development version and tested there. Once it is done, I will schedule some downtime and move LES to the new server with the new code base, but I will continue to provide updates anyway so you know what's coming when the switch is made.

Doing it this way to save having to make a 7.x version and an 8.x version then change after.

Plugin: Flagged posts

This one will show you if a post has already been flagged and how many times, you can add weight to it by also flagging or you can just see it has already been reported and ignore it.

A mod/admin can take whatever action, and then this indicator will clear.

If a threshold is hit the post will be automatically hidden. This threshold is set lower for <XX day accounts, so for example, if someone signs up from PurplePeopleHost and immediately starts advertising, ignoring the rules, 5 flags would basically remove the post, so only mod/admins can see it.

Latest release, v2.6.0, adds support for external nodes, which was a highly requested feature.

Control plane must remain in Hetzner Cloud, but you can now configure external nodes which can either be "generic", meaning from any provider, or Hetzner dedicated servers managed via Robot interface. In both cases, only SSH access is required, then hetzner-k3s will set up the nodes exactly like standard or autoscaled nodes.

We are already using this at work with dedicated servers for our Postgres cluster (with CloudNativePG). I love the integration.

The only limitation for now is that this only works if you configure the cluster to use the public network (with Wireguard encryption), because external nodes cannot connect to the Hetzner Cloud private networks.

However I will change this for Hetzner dedicated servers in a future release since dedicated servers can indeed be connected to a cloud private network via vSwitch.

I probably could set up a cronjob using imapsync somewhere, but besides all the faff to get it to work properly and tune everything (e.g., folders, labels, etc.), a family member would be the main user. I thought I'd use something more intuitive for a non-tech person.
